A particle detector includes a support member. A front electrode layer is disposed over the support member. A semiconductor heterojunction is disposed over the front electrode layer. The semiconductor heterojunction has at least a polycrystalline n-type layer and at least a polycrystalline p-type layer. A back electrode layer is disposed over the semiconductor heterojunction. The back electrode includes at least one removed portion that separates a first portion of the back electrode layer from a second portion of the back electrode layer. The particle detector also includes a first body of electrically insulating material which separates a first portion of the semiconductor heterojunction from a second portion of the semiconductor heterojunction. The first body of electrically insulating material also separates a first portion of the front electrode layer from a second portion of the front electrode layer.

Particle detector and method of making the same

A particle detector having a support member. A front electrode layer is disposed over the support member. A semiconductor junction having at least an n-type layer and at least a p-type layer is disposed over the front electrode layer. A back electrode layer is disposed over the semiconductor junction. The back electrode layer has a thickness which is selected to permit particles having energies in the range from about 0.5 MeV to about 5 MeV to enter the semiconductor junction.

Particle detector and method of detecting particles

A cabinet with a movable table on top is designed for use with seating apparatus, such as a chair. The cabinet and table can particularly be used with computer systems although they can also be used for eating or reading. The table can slide between extended and retracted positions relative to the chair. It can also be pivoted between a working position and an out-of-the-way position. The table can also be employed with both sliding and pivotal movements. A computer processing unit can be located in the cabinet along with a counterweight to offset the weight of the table and any load thereon, particularly when in the extended position.

Cabinet and table assembly for use with seating apparatus

A table assembly for seating apparatus has from one to four base assemblies positioned under one to four corner support portions of the seating apparatus. A first elongate base plate of the first base assembly extends under a first support portion on one side of the seating apparatus and extends toward a second side, projecting beyond the first side. A receptacle is affixed to the projecting portion of the first base plate and extends rearwardly toward a second base assembly, when used, under a second support portion. A rigid member connects the receptacle and the second base assembly which has an adjustable stop abutting an end of the second support. A third base assembly, when used, has a base plate under a third support portion of the seating apparatus on the second side and has an attached rigid member connected to the first base plate. A fourth base assembly, when used, is under a fourth support portion and also has an adjustable stop. A flexible member, when all four base assemblies are used, extends around the adjustable stop of the fourth base plate assembly to hold the stop in place. The base plate assemblies are designed so that the receptacle and a table-supporting post can be located on the other side of the seating apparatus, if desired. Jacks can be used between the first base plate and a frame member of the seating apparatus for adding stiffness to the first base plate. A special tilt assembly holds the table securely in a horizontal position, yet enables it to be readily titled.

A table assembly for use with seating apparatus has a base plate of sufficient size to fit under supports on at least one side of the seating apparatus. The seating apparatus stabilizes and supports the base plate which has a sleeve or the like at a forward portion thereof. An elongate member or post extends upwardly from the sleeve to support an end portion of a table. The elongate member can be of a telescoping design with a clamp for holding the table at a desired height. A track arrangement is affixed to an upper end of the post and to the bottom of the table to enable the table to slide between an out-of-the-way position and an operating position over the seating apparatus.

A table assembly for use with seating apparatus has a base plate of sufficient size to fit under supports on at least one side of the seating apparatus and has an elongate member or post extending upwardly from a forward portion of the base plate to support an end, portion of a table. A linkage connects a lower surface of the table with the elongate member and the linkage can be manipulated to enable the table to be swung down along the side of the elongate member when not in use. The table can also pivot in a horizontal plane relative to the base plate to be swung to an out-of-the-way position. The elongate member or post can also be of telescoping design with a clamp for holding the table at a desired distance from the base plate for height adjustment. The base plate can also be in a prestressed, curved condition for greater stiffness. The elongate member can be received in or over a sleeve mounted on the base plate with the sleeve being adjustable to place the elongate member in a vertical position. Different thicknesses of rings can be located around the sleeve for height adjustment purposes also. Pads with projections can be located under the base plate for greater stability and one pad can be adjustable with an upstanding stop plate to prevent rearward movement of the seating apparatus. Further, the base plate can be wider to accommodate the wheels of a wheelchair.

A TV table assembly for use with a chair has a base plate of a sufficient size to fit under a front leg and a back leg on one side of the chair. A lower sleeve is affixed to and extends upwardly from a forward portion of the base plate. A post has a lower end removably received in the sleeve. A table has a first U-shaped bracket extending downwardly from a lower surface thereof near one end. A second U-shaped bracket has upwardly-extending flanges positioned adjacent the downwardly-extending ones. An upper sleeve is affixed to the second bracket and extends downwardly to removably receive an upper end of the post. A threaded connector extends through both sets of flanges to hold the table in a fixed position relative to a horizontal plane, when tightened. Parallel walls extend upwardly from the base plate and rearwardly of the lower sleeve to serve as a magazine rack.

TV table

Apparatus is provided for engaging and moving leading edges of coils of sheet steel from one position to another along a steel processing line. For example, in a slitting line, the leading edge of a new coil of steel is moved by the apparatus from a slitter to a recoiler mandrel or drum. The engaging apparatus includes two elongate clamping members extending transversely of the steel sheet and having lengths exceeding the width of the slit sheet. Jack-screws are used to move the upper member toward and away from the lower one to engage the leading edge of the sheet and to release it. The clamping members and moving means are mounted on a carriage carried by overhead supports or by supports at one side of the line which support the carriage for movement from one position on the processing line to another. A roller extends the length of the lower clamping member and is positioned at the discharge or downstream side thereof to support the steel sheet as it moves beyond the clamping members. The roller can also be used without the clamping members.

Apparatus for handling sheet steel or the like

An apparatus is provided for descaling hot rolled steel strips or sheets by abrasion. This is preferably accomplished with an abrasive roll, which comprises a hub having a multiplicity of abrasive sheets extending generally radially therefrom and rotated at high speed with outer edges in contact with the metal strip moving thereby. The abrasive roll can have a length less than the width of the strip with means provided for maintaining one end of the abrasive roll in alignment with one longitudinal edge of the strip. This improves the life of the abrasive sheets since they do not move transversely over the longitudinal edge of the strip. The steel strip also can be supported in a curved manner to present a convex surface toward the abrasive roll when in contact therewith. The bent configuration of the strip helps to loosen the scale and hastens the descaling operation. For a lower production and lower cost descaling operation, one abrasive roll can be used with the steel strip coiled and uncoiled in a manner to present opposite surfaces toward the abrasive roll when it is moved thereby in two passes. To further improve the life of the abrasive roll, it is periodically checked to determine its condition of balance. Weights can then be added to the hub to restore the balanced condition, as necessary. A back-up roll for supporting a steel strip in contact with the abrasive roll can have metal collars supporting edge portions of the strip to prevent undue wear of the back-up roll.

Apparatus for descaling metal strips

Apparatus for slitting large metal sheets of substantial length and width is provided. The apparatus includes a slitting machine of the throatless type guided on a track to provide precise slitting of the sheet. The apparatus includes a long hold-down clamp mounted adjacent the slitter and the track. A supporting table is located on the side of the hold-down clamp opposite the slitter and the track and is provided with measuring heads which enable the sheet which is to be slit to first be cut to a precise, given length. Two measuring heads are provided, one of which causes the sheet to slow down and the second which actuates a shear. A lower supporting table is located on the side of the slitter opposite the clamp and both tables are provided with gauge heads for accurately positioning the sheet prior to being clamped and slit. Preferably, a double slit is made along the desired line to substantially avoid distortion of the metal sheet along the slit.
