The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a tertiary perester by contacting an acyl compound with a tertiary hydroperoxide in the presence of an enzyme catalyst. The acyl compound has the formula R,&lsqb;C(O)OR,&rsqb;,, wherein R,is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C,-C,group, optionally containing one or more hetero atoms, R,represents hydrogen or has the same meaning as described for R,, and n is 1-5, or a polyalcohol ester of R,C(O)OH, wherein R,has the same meaning as described above. The tertiary hydroperoxide has the formula &lsqb;HOOCR,R,&rsqb;,R,, wherein R,represents either a methyl or an ethyl group, R,has the same meaning as described for R,, and m is 1-5.

Process for the preparation of a tertiary perester

Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) are used as binders for drying paint systems, wherein the poly (3-hydroxyalkanoate) component comprises poly (3-hydroxyalkanoate) containing mono- and/or poly-unsaturated side groups. Medium chain length PHAs based on unsaturated vegetable fatty acids are preferred. PHAs are used in the form of a solution in organic solvents and in the form of a dispersion in water. The PHA binders are used for the formulation of solvent-based PHA paint systems and for the formulations of PHA latexes.
