The invention features methods and apparatus for obtaining silicon carbide whiskers on a continuous basis. Rice hulls or other carbon and silicon containing feed materials are continuously fed to a conversion zone in an unagitated state in order to promote whisker growth. The conversion zone is continuously purged, preferably with an inert gas such as nitrogen. The purging gas is vented directly out of the conversion zone and carries away gaseous reaction products and impurities, prevents oxidation of the whiskers and keeps glasses from condensing and depositing on the furnace surfaces. The feed materials are fed in a dry state to the conversion zone in order to prevent erosion of the furnace walls. After conversion and cooling the whiskers are separated from the mass of particulate silicon carbide. The whiskers find use as reinforcements.

Continuous silicon carbide whisker production

A filter for removing solids from a liquid of the type wherein a rotatable basket or drum has media inside straining from inside out. A power operated conveyor is mounted in the drum above the axis of rotation for receiving and positively removing solids. Thus, a liquid level is possible above the axis of rotation but below the conveyor so that a large filter area is in contact with the liquid while not interfering with the operation of the conveyor. A retractable scoop is provided for positively delivering the solids to the conveyor with an alternate sealing arrangement. A discharge ramp is carried adjacent an end of a baffle which extends above a liquid inlet upwardly toward the conveyor and is spaced from an inner wall of the drum to collect solids therebetween and accommodate the scoop for their removal. An improved means for equalizing the distribution of the liquid within the drum is also provided.

Drum filter apparatus

A filter for removing solids from a liquid of the type wherein a rotatable basket or drum has media inside straining from inside out. Thus, a liquid level is possible above the axis of rotation but below the conveyor so that a large filter area is in contact with the liquid while not interfering with the operation of the conveyor. Drum filter and method

Apparatus and method are illustrated for removing solids from filter media supported by a backup roll wherein an elongated brush exerts a flicking action on the solids collected by the media during a filtering operation and deposits the solids upon a splash plate where the solids are collected for reclamation. Spray means are provided for directing a backwash of water across the filter media on a side thereof remote from the brush for cleansing the filter media.

Apparatus for removing solids from filter media

A liquid filter immersed in a contaminated liquid, defines an open space therein receiving filtered liquid in a bottom portion thereof through a filter medium disposed thereabout, with power operated means for removing spent filter medium while fresh filter medium is supplied, and an outlet communicating with the filtered liquid maintaining a liquid level outside the frame higher than a liquid level within the frame for producing the filtering action.
