A permanent magnet alloy and method for production thereof. The permanent magnet alloy has a rare earth element including Nd, B, Fe, C, and oxygen, with additions of Co and at least one of Cu, Ga and Ag. The alloy may be produced by contacting particles thereof with carbon- and oxygen-containing material to achieve desired carbon and oxygen contents.

A permanent magnet of the neodymium-iron-boron type having improved corrosion resistance imparted by a combination of oxygen, carbon and nitrogen. Oxygen is provided in an amount equal to or greater than 0.6 weight percent in combination with carbon of 0.05-0.15 weight percent and nitrogen 0.15 weight percent maximum. Preferably, oxygen is within the range of 0.6-1.2% with carbon of 0.05-0.1% and nitrogen 0.02-0.15 weight percent or more preferably 0.04-0.08 weight percent. The magnet may be heated in an argon atmosphere and thereafter quenched in an atmosphere of either argon or nitrogen to further improve the corrosion resistance of the magnet.

Particles for the production of permanent magents are obtained by producing an article having Ca and a rare earth oxide including at least Nd oxide. The article is heated to effect Ca rare earth oxide reduction. Thereafter, particles of -60 mesh or finer are formed from this article. Leaching of Ca from the particles is achieved by contacting the particles with an organic acid having at least 3 carbon atoms, preferably propionic or butanoic acid.

A method for producing a dysprosium-iron alloy for use in the manufacture of rare-earth element containing, iron-boron permanent magnets. A particle mixture of dysprosium oxide, iron, boron and calcium is compacted, the compact is heated to form a metallic compound comprising dysprosium, boron and iron and to form calcium oxide. There is no need for additives such as calcium chloride that aid in particle disintegration during washing. A particle mass of -35 mesh is produced from the compact. The particle mass is washed with cold water, and the water is reacted with the calcium oxide and calcium to form calcium hydroxide, while preventing oxidation of the particle mass. The calcium hydroxide is removed from the particle mass as by repeated water washing.

Method for producing dysprosium-iron-boron alloy powder

Uranium is recovered from a carbonate leach solution containing a dissolved uranium salt and a monovalent ion. The pH of the leach solution is adjusted to about 5 to about 7.5, and preferably to about 6 to about 7. Phosphate ion is then added to typical in-situ leach solutions in an amount from about 10 to about 30 mole % in excess of the amount needed to stoichiometrically react with the uranium in said solution. This results in the precipitation of a compound made up of the monovalent ion, uranium, and the phosphate ion, which is insoluble in the solution. The precipitate is then separated from the solution preferably by means of a centrifuge or a vortex clarifier. It can then be dissolved in acid, and the uranium extracted into an organic solvent such as DEHPA-TOPA in kerosene.
