An earth-boring tool includes a body, at least one blade, and at least one rotatable cutting structure. The blade extends axially from the body and extends radially outward from a center longitudinal axis of the earth-boring tool to less than an outer diameter of the earth-boring tool. The blade defines a first cutting profile. The at least one rotatable cutting structure assembly is coupled to the body and includes a leg extending axially from the body and a rotatable cutting structure rotatably coupled to the leg. The rotatable cutting structure defines a second cutting profile extending to the outer diameter of the earth-boring tool. The first cutting profile overlaps with the second cutting profile in a radial direction in an amount that is less than 20% of the outer diameter of the earth-boring tool. Earth-boring tools having fixed blades and rotatable cutting structures and related methods

An earth-boring rotary tool includes a tool body, at least one fixed blade associated with the tool body and configured to carry a fixed cutting element, and at least one leg configured to carry a rolling cutter. The tool body has a slot extending longitudinally generally parallel to a longitudinal axis defining an axial center of the tool body. The slot is at least partially defined by a first sidewall, a second sidewall opposing the first sidewall, a third sidewall extending between the first sidewall and the second sidewall, and an axial end wall of the tool body. A portion of the leg is disposed within the slot of the tool body and abuts the first sidewall of the tool body. A wedge is disposed within the slot and pins the leg to the tool body within the slot.

Earth-boring rotary tools having fixed blades and rolling cutter legs, and methods of forming same

An earth boring drill bit comprising: one or more legs; a bit body having a blade and a slot for receiving the leg; and one or more wedge between the leg and the slot fixing the leg within the slot. The slot may have two parallel sidewalls with one of the sidewalls forming an acute angle and the other forming an obtuse angle. The wedge may be secured immediately next to the obtuse angled sidewall. The wedge may have two obtuse angled sides. One or more bolts through each wedge may secure both the wedge and the leg to the bit body. One of the obtuse angled sidewalls of the wedge may be secured immediately next to an acute angled side of the leg.

System and method for leg retention on hybrid bits

A rotary drag bit includes a primary cutter row comprising at least one primary cutter mounted on a blade, at least some cutters in the primary cutter row having a portion of a cutting surface thereof covered by a portion of the blade. A backup cutter row comprising at least one cutter may also be included, and at least a portion of a cutting surface of at least some cutters in the backup cutter row is covered by a portion of the blade. Enhanced support for cutters is provided against impact loading.

Methods of forming earth-boring tools include assembling a plurality of head sections about a longitudinal axis to form a bit body, rotatably mounting a cutter to a cutter bearing shaft of each head section, and forming at least one groove on an outer surface of a bit leg of at least one head section, causing the at least one groove to extend along a curved path from a leading side of the bit leg to a trailing side of the bit leg between an upper sidewall and a lower sidewall.

Methods of forming earth-boring tools having features for affecting cuttings flow

An earth boring bit has cutting elements arranged to avoid tracking. The bit has a bit body having a bit axis of rotation. First, second and third cones are rotatably mounted to the bit body, each of the cones having a plurality of rows of cutting elements including a heel row and an adjacent row. The heel row of the first cone has at least equal the number of cutting elements as the heel rows of the other cones. The adjacent row of the second cone has at least 90 percent as many cutting elements as the heel row of the first cone. The heel row of the third cone has a pitch that is in the range from 20-50% greater than the heel rows of the first cone.

Cutting structure for earth-boring bit to reduce tracking

An earth-boring bit has a bit body having a plurality of bit legs extending longitudinally therefrom, each bit leg comprising one or more groove regions formed along a laterally outer surface thereof. Each groove region comprises a fluid course for drilling fluid and cuttings to pass across the outer surface. A ridge may be disposed adjacent a lower edge of one or more of the groove regions. Each groove region may also be positioned at differing heights on the bit legs. Methods of forming earth-boring bits are also disclosed.

An earth boring drill bit comprising cones, each cone having a land on its mid portion with at least two rows of compacts that are staggered with respect to adjacent compacts on another row. The compacts of these two rows may also have the same size. The compacts of these two inner rows are closer to each other than to any other compacts on the cone.

An earth-boring bit has a bit body and at least one cone for rotation relative to the bit body. The cone has a gage surface and a nose area separated by a central area. A nose insert is located in the nose area. The nose insert has a barrel located within a hole in the nose area and an outer end protruding from the cone, the outer end has a perimeter that is a plane perpendicular to a barrel axis of the nose insert.

Earth-boring bit with shear cutting elements

An earth boring bit has an outer row of inserts located within extra deep holes. Each of the holes has a cylindrical sidewall with a depth greater than the length of the barrel of the insert mounted within. The difference in depth is at least equal to a distorted entry zone in the hole. A portion of the sidewall that includes the entry zone surrounds the cutting end, reducing the projection of the cutting end from the land.
