Two unequal impedance input port RF power combiner is used alone or as a component of a three equal input impedance input port RF power combiner with isolation between all ports. The combiner has a band pass of at least two octaves and the capacity to handle at least 5 kw. The combiner may be used in a transmission system and methods of isolation of the input ports by the resistive shunting of selected transformer windings are disclosed.

A system and method for combining RF signals by a series of in-phase combiners. The system uses a series of switched, high efficiency amplifiers which may be selectively operated to obtain a desired output signal, such as an Amplitude Modulated (AM) signal. The output signals of the amplifiers are combined by a series of in-phase combiners. In a high linearity system a feedback loop is used to correct for combiner losses. The RF power normally lost in the combiners is recovered and available to increase the overall combiner efficiency.

A wideband communication system and method for wideband communication that provide plural signals to a single transmitting antenna. Each signal is independently modulated and amplified, and then combined with other signals for transmission on the antenna. The independent amplification, that is, amplification without prior combination with other signals, reduces the number of intermodulation products (IP), thereby reducing the need for complicated IP cancellation techniques. A distribution circuit provides that when the number of signals exceeds the number of amplifiers, two signals may be combined before amplification. The amplified signals may be combined before transmission in combiners that include transformers that reduce IP caused by RF interference. The transformers are formed by enclosing the transmission line within a cavity in a block of ferrite material.

Multiple RF signal amplification method and apparatus

A method and apparatus for activating PIN diodes. The PIN diodes are formed as a switch around terminals of another device. When the PIN diodes are made conductive, they shunt the terminals of the device, operatively by-passing the device. The PIN diodes are made conductive by RF signals which selectively provide a bias level to the PIN diodes.

PIN diode activation method and apparatus

A high speed antenna coupler and method for rapidly switching binary weighted values of inductance and capacitance into and out of the circuit between an antenna and a utilization circuit without unacceptably degrading the coupler or slowing the switching action. PIN diodes are utilized as switches and the control wires for the PIN diodes are disposed interiorly of the copper tubing which forms the inductance elements. The control wire for a particular inductor is withdrawn from the interior of that inductor adjacent the mid-point thereof so that the control wire will be at the same RF potential as the inductor being controlled. Two diodes are utilized for each inductor, one connected to each end thereof, so that only half of the normal reverse bias is required for switching purposes. Where a transformer is utilized to couple the antenna to the utilization circuit, the control wires may be disposed interiorly of the copper tubing which forms the winding of the transformer. A novel high voltage drive circuit is also disclosed.
