A condition monitoring system for monitoring a rolling element bearing. The system includes a signal processing unit and a vibration energy harvester. The vibration energy harvester provides an electromagnetic transducer. When vibrated, a coil moves relative to a static electromagnetic field to create power. To create a compact and efficient condition monitoring system, it uses the electromagnetic transducer also as a vibration sensor, a velocity sensor. The signal processing unit determines if the bearing has been damaged and in some embodiments also the extent of the damage. The electromagnetic transducer is attached directly or indirectly to the rolling element bearing.

Condition monitoring system

Condition monitoring a cage to detect cage damage by detecting if a conducting material applied to a cage is unbroken or broken. The basic principle of the invention is to integrate a completely passive LC circuit, having the conductive material, on the cage. The LC circuit is magnetically activated and it is externally detectable when conducting material is unbroken or broken. The conducting material of the passive LC circuit is easily broken or worn, being weaker than the cage material. The cage material is non-metallic, such as a polymer material or other suitable synthetic materials.

Condition monitoring

An assembly providing a bearing, a lubricant and a contamination sensor for determining a level of contamination in the lubricant. The sensor includes an EM wave generator for generating an EM signal, and an EM sensing element arranged in contact with the lubricant. The EM sensing element receives the generated EM signal and transmits an output signal whose properties are responsive to real and imaginary parts of a complex relative permittivity of the lubricant. The output signal is received by an EM measuring device that measures first and second parameters of the output signal, which are respectively representative of the real and imaginary parts of the complex relative permittivity. The EM measuring device determines a level of water contamination in the lubricant, based on the measured first parameter alone and determines a level of metal particle contamination in the grease, based on the measured first and second parameters.

A system for detecting the presence of water in oil, provides a detection head including a gap in which oil to be monitored may be received; at least a first optical fiber having a first end, optically coupled to transmit light across the gap; a micro electro-opto-mechanical (MEOM) device, the MEOM device comprising a photo-emitter and a photo-detector integrated onto a silicon based substrate, the photo-emitter being optically coupled to transmit light into a second end of the first optical fiber and the photo-detector being arranged to receive transmitted light that has been transmitted across the gap; and an electronic interface to the MEOM device for communicating therewith. A processor may be provided to analyze and compare the respective light signals to determine an amount of water present in the oil. By observing variations in absorption, the presence of water can be identified.

A detector for oil condition monitoring includes an optical fiber having a first end and a second end having an end face. A sensor body has a gap in which a sample of the oil may be received and a reflecting surface, the second end of the optical fiber being embedded in the sensor body and having an end face spaced from the reflecting surface across the gap. Light emitted from the optical fiber can pass through the sample of oil and be reflected by the reflecting surface back into the optical fiber. By interferometry of the respective signals, the condition of the oil can be determined.

A bearing arrangement having a bearing mounted in a housing, wherein a grease lubricant is present within the housing for lubricating the bearing, a support frame at least partly made of an electrically insulating material, arranged in a space within the housing that lies axially between the bearing and a housing seal. The support frame includes at least one electrode pair having first and second electrodes arranged to enable grease lubricant to contact therewith. A capacitance meter provided for measuring a capacitance between the first and second electrodes. The support frame provides a radially oriented surface and a plurality of ribs that extend in a radially inward direction, the ribs having sufficient circumferential spacing to enable grease to flow between adjacent ribs. One of the first and second electrodes is provided on the radially oriented surface of the support frame or on a rib surface that faces an adjacent rib.

Capacitance measurement in a bearing housing

A bearing arrangement is provided having a bearing mounted in a housing, wherein a grease lubricant is present within the housing for lubricating the bearing. The arrangement further provides a support frame made of an electrically insulating material, arranged in a space within the housing between the bearing and a housing seal. The support frame is provided with at least one electrode pair having first and second electrodes arranged such that a portion of the grease lubricant is located between the first and second electrodes. A capacitance meter is provided for measuring a capacitance between the first and second electrodes. The first and second electrodes of the at least one electrode pair are provided on a radially oriented surface of the support frame, which surface is arranged such that the grease is able to move in an axial direction over the surface.

An apparatus () comprises a wireless sensor system () with electronic circuitry () and a power supply () for powering the electronic circuitry. The power supply comprises a primary cell () and an energy scavenger (). The energy scavenger scavenges ambient energy and converts the scavenged ambient energy into electric energy. The sensor system is configured for having the primary cell power the electronic circuitry when the energy scavenger is inactive. The system is configured for performing at least one of having the energy scavenger power the electronic circuitry via the primary cell when the energy scavenger is active, using a capacitance of the primary cell as a buffer for the electric energy; and having the energy scavenger recharge the primary cell.

The present invention concerns a power supply () comprising a primary cell () adapted to provide a primary cell current. The primary cell () comprises an anode, a cathode current collector and an electrolyte, whereby a passivation layer is formed on a surface of the anode as a result of a chemical reaction between the anode and the electrolyte. To ensure that the passivation layer remains essentially intact for the lifetime of the primary cell, the power supply () further comprises a current limiter () that is configured to prevent the magnitude of the primary cell current exceeding a value that would damage the passivation layer.

Extended duration power supply

A system and method for executing a plurality of pre-determined signal processing tasks includes an energy source for powering a signal processing system. The energy source supplies an amount of energy that varies over the service life of the energy source. The signal processing system determines an amount of energy available from the energy source and selects for execution a specific one of the pre-determined signal processing tasks in dependence on the amount determined.
