A switchable element, a device and a method for analogue and programmable computing operating on electromagnetic waves having a frequency, wherein the switchable element is configured to configured to, in response to an activation signal, switch from having a first dielectric permittivity for electromagnetic waves having a frequency to having a second dielectric permittivity for electromagnetic waves having the frequency, and the device comprises a plurality of the switchable elements that are adapted to be switched individually in accordance with the computing operation.

An electrochromic (EC) cell having improved dielectric tunability and lower dielectric losses is disclosed. A multi-layer structure includes at least one electrochromic layer of a transition metal oxide between electrode layers. Two electrolyte layers are located on either side of the at least one electrochromic layer and next to the electrode layers. An ion storage film layer of a transition metal oxide may be provided between the electrochromic layer and one of the electrolyte layers. This structure prevents the shortening of the channel height when a voltage is applied therefore reducing dielectric losses.

In order to calibrate in amplitude and phase the individual transceiver elements () of an active antenna array for a mobile telecommunications network, each transceiver element including a transmit and a receive path () coupled to an antenna element (), each transceiver element includes a comparator () for comparing phase and amplitude of transmitted or received signals with reference signals in order to adjust the characteristics of the antenna beam. In order to provide an accurate means of reference signal distribution, a feed arrangement distributes the reference signals and includes a waveguide () of a predetermined length which is terminated at one end () in order to set up a standing wave system along its length, and a plurality of coupling points () at predetermined points along the length of the waveguide, which are each coupled to a comparator of a respective transceiver element.

Calibration of active antenna arrays for mobile telecommunications

In order to reduce the weight, cost and complexity of an active antenna array, designed for use with a plurality of different mobile telecommunications systems (multi-band system), the array comprises a plurality of antenna elements, which are divided into a plurality of antenna groups; a plurality of RF transceivers, which are divided into transceiver sets, wherein each transceiver of a set is arranged to operate on a different mobile telecommunications system, and including respective phase shifting and feeding networks coupled between each transceiver set and a respective antenna group, so that each transceiver of a set is coupled to each antenna element of the respective antenna group.

An active transceiver array for a wireless telecommunications network. The transceiver array comprises a plurality of calibratable transceiver modules. Each transceiver module comprises a transceiver chain operable to process a primary signal and generate a processed primary signal; a comparator unit operable to compare said primary signal and said processed primary signal to determine a transceiver chain error induced by said transceiver chain in said processed primary signal; and a correction unit which uses the transceiver error to correct said primary signal to be processed by said transceiver chain.

Calibration

The power amplifier mainly includes a main amplifier, two splitters, one combiner, one subtracter, two phase shifters, one attenuator and one error amplifier. The splitters, subtracter and combiner are designed in the form of 90-degree or quadrature hybrid couplers. A quadrature hybrid can be implemented with any lumped or transmission-line elements and has an important advantage compared to the in-phase splitter that at equal values of reflection coefficients from loads connected to the in phase and 90&#xb0; phase shift terminals, the reflection wave is lacking at the main input terminal and, consequently, the input voltage standing wave ratio of a quadrature hybrid does not depend on the equal load mismatch level.
