A method for the emulsion polymerization of one or more olefins by reacting a ligand of general formulae Ia and Ib or a mixture of at least two ligands Ia or Ib, wherein R respectively represents one or several of the following radicals; hydrogen, halogen, nitrile, C-C-alkyl groups, C-C-alkoxy groups, C-C-aralkyl groups, C6-C14-aryl groups, and wherein identical or different compounds of general formulae Ia and Ib can, optionally, be concatenated by one or several bridges, with a phosphine compound PR3' and a metal compound of general formula M(L)or M(L)(L), wherein the variables are defined as follows: M is a transition metal of groups 7-10 in the periodic system of the elements; Lrepresents phosphanes (R)PHor amines (R)NHwith identical or different radicals R, ether (R)O, HO, alkohols (R)OH, pyridine, pyridine derivatives of formula CH(R)N, CO, C-C-alkylnitriles, C-C-arylnitriles or ethylenically unsaturated double bond systems, wherein x is a whole number ranging from 0-3, Lrepresents halogenide ions RNH, wherein x is a whole number ranging from 0 3 and Rrepresents C-C-alkyl, and C-C-alkylane ions, allylane ions, benzylane ions or arylane ions, wherein Land Lcan be concatenated with each other by one or several covalent bonds, z is a number ranging from 0 4. The invention also relates to the immediate use of the reaction product in the polymerization or copolymerization of olefins in water or in a solvent mixture containing at least 50 vol. % water in the presence of an emulsifier and, optionally, in the presence of an activator. 

Method for the emulsion polymerization of olefins

The invention relates to a method for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions, by the polymerisation of one or more olefins in aqueous media in the presence of dispersing agents and optionally organic solvents, characterised in that the polymerisation of the olefin(s) is catalysed by means of one or more complex compounds of general formula (I), where at least one of the groups Rto Rmust be in the form of a group of the following general formula (II) where Z=an electron-withdrawing group and n=a whole number from 1 to 5.

Preparation of aqueous polymer dispersions

A process for emulsion polymerizing one or more olefins involves reacting it/them with at least one complex compound of the formula Ia or b where M is a transition metal from groups 7 to 10 of the Periodic Table of the Elements and is preferably Ni in aqueous dispersion and at least one radical Rto Rand optionally one radical Rto Rcontains a hydrophilic group X, selection being made from &#x2014;SO, &#x2014;O&#x2014;PO, NH(R), N(R)or &#x2014;(OCHCH)OH, where n is an integer between 1 and 15. For the process of the invention it is optional to use an activator such as, for example, olefin complexes of rhodium or of nickel. This invention further relates to dispersions of polyolefins such as polyethylene and ethylene copolymers in water, for example, and to the use of the aqueous dispersions of the invention for paper applications such as paper coating or surface sizing, paints, adhesive base materials, molded foams such as mattresses, textile and leather applications, carpet back coatings, or pharmaceutical applications.

Process for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions by reaction of one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds in aqueous medium in the presence of a complex compound which possesses the structural element Y&mdash;M&mdash;E, E standing for nitrogen, M for a transition metal of groups 7 to 10 of the periodic system of the elements and Y for oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen or phosphorus, and which possesses no hydrophilic groups in its ligand system.
