A tracker for a surgical navigation system, a tracker system, and a surgical navigation system are provided. The tracker comprises a carrier and an electrical circuit disposed on the carrier. The electrical circuit comprises at least one infrared light emitting diode, IR-LED, and a battery or a wireless power reception device configured to receive power wirelessly, wherein the battery or the wireless power reception device is configured to provide power to operate the at least one IR-LED. The electrical circuit is configured to limit a current for at least one of the at least one IR-LED to not exceed 15 mA.

Tracker for a surgical navigation system

A technique of generating surgical information from intra-operatively acquired image data of vertebrae and pre-operatively acquired image data of the vertebrae is presented. A method implementation includes obtaining first image segments each containing a different vertebra, and second image segments each containing a different vertebra. The first image segments have been derived by processing the pre-operatively acquired image data, and the second image segments have been derived by processing the inter-operatively acquired image data. The method includes identifying one of the second image segments and one of the first image segments that contain the same vertebra, and determining a transformation that registers the identified first image segment and the identified second image segment. The method includes generating surgical information based on the transformation and the identified first image segment.

Technique of generating surgical information from intra-operatively and pre-operatively acquired image data

A field generator assembly for surgical navigation is provided. The field generator assembly comprises a field generator configured to generate an electromagnetic field, an attachment member configured to attach the field generator to a body of a patient, at least one first arm comprising a first portion configured to be in contact with a surface of the body of the patient when the field generator is attached to the body, and a second portion movably attached relative to the field generator, and at least one sensor configured to measure a spatial relationship between the at least one arm and the field generator. Also provided is a method of obtaining a relative pose between a surface of the body and a field generator.

Field generator assembly and method for surgical navigation

A method and a device for determining a respective position of one or more markers in a 3D image coordinate system are provided. A plurality of image data sets taken from a 3D volume in which an object and one or more markers are disposed. The 3D volume comprises a central volume containing at least a portion of the object and further comprises a peripheral volume adjacent to the central volume and containing the one or more markers. The image data sets have been taken from at least one of different positions and different orientations relative to the object. A first subset comprises image data sets that each includes at least one dedicated marker of the one or more markers and a second subset comprises at least one image data set that does not include the at least one dedicated marker. The method further comprises determining, from the image data sets, a position of the at least one dedicated marker in a 3D image coordinate system of a 3D reconstruction of the central volume with the object portion.

Technique for determining a position of one or more imaged markers in an image coordinate system

An optical tracking device, a surgical navigation system and a surgical navigation method are disclosed. The optical tracking device comprises a body having at least two optically distinguishable lines, wherein at least one of the lines is an edge of the body. The lines are configured to be detected by an optical detection system simultaneously. They have a fixed spatial relationship between each other. The method comprises providing the optical tracking device, acquiring data describing the fixed spatial relationship, detecting the lines and determining the spatial position and/or orientation of the optical tracking device based on the detected lines and the fixed spatial relationship.

A technique for processing patient-specific image data for computer assisted surgical navigation. A database is provided including multiple first data sets of two- or three-dimensional image data. Each first data set is representative of first shape data or first biometric data of a skin surface of at least one patient. The method further comprises obtaining, by an optical camera system, a second data set of two- or three-dimensional image data of a skin surface of a particular patient and deriving second shape data or second biometric data of the skin surface from the second data set. By comparing the second shape data or second biometric data with the first shape data or the first biometric data of one or more first data sets, a similarity score is calculated. A signal generated based on the similarity score triggers one of selection and de-selection of a first data set.

Technique for processing patient-specific image data for computer-assisted surgical navigation

A controller for a surgical navigation system is presented. The controller is configured to receive a position signal from a tracking system, wherein the position signal is indicative of a position of a hand-held surgical device that is tracked by the surgical navigation system inside an operation environment. The controller is further configured to receive sound signals from a plurality of microphones directed toward the operation environment, wherein the sound signals potentially contain one or more voice commands from one or more voice sources inside the operation environment. The controller is configured to process the sound signals dependent on the position signal.

Surgical system control based on voice commands

A tracker, a surgical tool system, a surgical navigation system, and a method for operating a surgical navigation system are provided. The tracker is configured to be associated with a patient or a surgical tool that is to be tracked by the surgical navigation system. The tracker comprises an optical fibre having a longitudinal extension and configured to be optically coupled to a light source such that the optical fibre transmits light emitted by the light source. The optical fibre has a lateral surface along its longitudinal extension and is configured to emit light via at least a portion of the lateral surface.

Electromagnetic field generator

A method, a controller, and a surgical hybrid navigation system for transferring a registration of three dimensional image data of a surgical object from a first to a second surgical navigation system are described. A first tracker that is detectable by a first detector of the first surgical navigation system is arranged in a fixed spatial relationship with the surgical object and a second tracker that is detectable by a second detector of the second surgical navigation system is arranged in a fixed spatial relationship with the surgical object. The method includes registering the three dimensional image data of the surgical object in a first coordinate system of the first surgical navigation system and determining a first position and orientation of the first tracker in the first coordinate system and a second position and orientation of the second tracker in a second coordinate system of the second surgical navigation system.
