BAW biosensor including heater and temperature sensor and methods for using the same

An approach is described that combines distinct properties of a specialized porous nitrocellulose film (PNC) with quantum nanoparticles to create an improved assay and detection sensitivity, permitting the development of a camera-based imaging system for fluorescent detection of macromolecules in microarray format. The two properties of PNC that facilitate the approach are an extraordinarily high binding capacity and a newly observed internal scattering of light. Quantum nanoparticles complement these PNC properties by providing a higher level of emitted light than the fluorescent dyes in common microarray use. Overall, the approach allows for instrument cost savings, reduced imaging time, and the ability to remotely image.

Protein microarray assay imager

A cartridge for sample handling and sensing includes (i) a sample port; (ii) a first fluid port connected to the sample reservoir in the distal region via a first fluid channel; and (iii) a second fluid port connected to the sample reservoir via a second fluid channel. The cartridge includes (i) a sensor platform comprising a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator and a fluid flow path comprising a sensing region extending across a sensing surface of the BAW resonator; and (ii) a fluid valve between the sample reservoir and the sensing region. A sample may be applied to the sample port; first volume of fluid may be injected through the first fluid port; and then a second volume of fluid may be injected through the second fluid port to drive the sample into the sensing region of the fluid flow path.

Cartridges for integrated BAW biosensors and methods for using the same

Methods and systems are provided for imaging a microarray of a microarray assembly. The microarray assembly may be configured as a protein microarray and may be used to visualize protein expression levels in sample for disease detection and/or diagnosis. In one example, the microarray assembly may comprise a laser pointed in a first direction, a camera positioned parallel to and vertically below the laser, a first dichroic mirror vertically aligned with the laser for reflecting light emitted from the laser, a second mirror vertically aligned with the camera and horizontally aligned with the first dichroic mirror, and a chip coated in a nitrocellulose film and including an array of wells containing one or more biomolecules.

Portable microarray assembly

A system configured to monitor ambient illumination experienced by a subject. In one embodiment, the system comprises an illumination sensor, a timer, and a storage module. The illumination sensor is configured to monitor an intensity of ambient illumination within two or more wavelength ranges by generating one or more output signals that convey information related to the intensity of ambient illumination within the two or more wavelength ranges. The timer is configured to indicate the passage of periods of time. The storage module is configured to store information related to the intensity of ambient illumination within the two or more wavelength ranges, as conveyed by the one or more output signals, for individual periods of time. The system is portable to be carried by the subject.

System and method for monitoring information related to sleep

A device for measuring a resistance includes a comparator. A D-type flip-flop has its D input connected to the output of the comparator and its latch input connected for receiving a pulse signal at a fixed pulse repetition rate. A reference voltage source is connected to a first of the inputs of the comparator and an integrator is coupled between an output of the flip-flop and the second of the two inputs of the comparator. The integrator includes a resistor whereby the integrator develops a voltage at the second input of the comparator that depends on the pulse repetition rate and on the resistance of the resistor. The comparator, the integrator and the flip-flop are connected in a negative feedback loop such that at steady state the voltage developed by the integrator at the second input of the comparator is substantially equal to the reference voltage.

A skin patch includes first and second layers of material and a telesensor sandwiched between the first and second layers. The first layer has a coating of skin-compatible adhesive material on its face that is remote from the second layer.

A thermometer is disclosed that utilizes a thermistor as a temperature sensor, to control the period and duty cycle of a multivibrator circuit. A second circuit, controlled by a microcontroller, measures both the charge and discharge times of the oscillation. From the ratio of these parameters, a precise indication of temperature can be obtained that is independent of temperature variations within the active components and the charging capacitor of the multivibrator circuit. The method is also independent of the value of the charging capacitor. Furthermore, by measuring the same ratio when a fixed resistor is substituted for the thermistor, a cell constant can be derived. The cell constant is used to calibrate the non-ideal response of the multivibrator circuit, thus providing a more accurate measurement of temperature.

A wide dynamic range optical receiver has low and high sensitivity signal channels for converting first and second portions of an optical input signal into voltage values representative of the various portions of the optical input signal. The voltage signals are converted into digital values by a converting means and a reconstruction is performed in a combining means to produce a digital output representative of the optical input signal. The wide dynamic range optical receiver may be used in an optical signal measurement instrument, such as an optical time domain reflectometer, where the optical return signal from a fiber under test is coupled to the wide dynamic range optical receiver in first and second portions with the first portion having an optical power level substantially less than the second portion.

An input signal is sampled by alternately coupling the input signal and a reference level to a sample storage element, whereby the magnitude of the signal stored by the storage element immediately following application of the input signal to the storage element is a function of the input signal magnitude and the magnitude of the signal stored by the storage element immediately preceding coupling of the input signal to the storage element is a function of the reference level.

An acousto-optic modulator for use in an optical time domain reflectometer to test multimode optical fibers has an active material, such as AS-Se-Ge or As.sub.2 S.sub.3 glass, that has a high figure of merit with a low insertion loss. The transducer for the modulator is configured to have a height that encompasses the multimode beam diameter at the optical wavelength, and a length that is consistent with a theoretical lower limit that is a function of the acoustic and optical wavelengths. Sufficient RF power is applied to the modulator to produce an angular efficiency, or optical throughput, that is sufficient to meet the specifications for the optical time domain reflectometer. Further dead zone correction for the optical time domain reflectometer is obtained by deriving a transient response signal for the optical time domain reflectometer as a function of a measured output electrical signal in response to a known input optical signal, and subtracting the transient response signal from an output electrical signal obtained in response to an unknown input optical signal to derive a corrected measured output electrical signal.

An automatic masking system is used in an optical time domain reflectometer for implementing a method of compensating for relaxation transients in an optical receiver in the OTDR. The masking system drives an optical modulator that masks the optical reciver from high amplitude optical pulses in the return reflected light from a fiber under test. A masking pattern corresponding to the high amplitude optical pulses is generated from a first acquisition of data with the receiver unmasked from the return reflected light. The masking pattern is stored and used for generating a signal from the masking system to the optical modulator for blocking the high amplitude optical pulses in the return reflected light during a subsequent acquisition of data. In a third acquisition of data of the return reflected light, the optical modulator masks the receiver from the return reflected light. Combining the acquired data of the blocked return reflected light with the acquired data with the high amplitude optical pulses blocked, produces an output free of relaxation transients produced by the receiver. Combining the high amplitude optical pulse data from the first acquisition with the output from the subtracted acquisitions produces an output representative of the return reflected light.
