The present invention relates to a method for producing a membrane for a fuel cell or electrolytic cell, in which (i) a liquid coating composition, which contains a supported catalyst containing precious metal and also contains an ionomer, is applied to a polymer electrolyte membrane which contains an ionomer, the ionomer of the liquid coating composition and the ionomer of the polymer electrolyte membrane each being a copolymer which contains as monomer a fluoroethylene and a fluorovinyl ether containing a sulfonic acid group, (ii) the coated polymer electrolyte membrane is heated to a temperature in the range from 178° C. to 250° C.

A known method for producing porous graphitized carbon material covered with metal nanoparticles involves infiltrating a porous template framework of inorganic material with a carbon precursor. After thermal treatment of the precursor, the template is removed and the particulate porous carbon material is covered with a catalytically active substance. According to the invention, in order to keep the proportion of the noble metal loading at a low level, the thermal treatment of the precursor first involves carbonization, and the material is not graphitized into graphitized, particulate, porous carbon material until the template has been removed. The graphitized carbon material has a hierarchical pore structure with a pore volume of at least 0.5 cm/g and at least 75% of the pore volume is apportioned to macropores with, size 100 to 5000 nm. Before covering with catalytically active substance, the carbon material is subjected to an activation treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere.

The production of noble metal oxalate complexes from noble metal precursors and oxalic acid and/or oxalic acid salts is an exothermic reaction, in which heat and COare produced, is described. The temperature can increase above the decomposition point of the noble metal oxalate complexes in the course of the reaction, which simultaneously releases more CO. For safety reasons, when the reaction is carried out on a large scale, it is therefore necessary to take into consideration that the product must not be decomposed by heat that is produced during the reaction. Therefore, according to the invention, a method for the production of noble metal oxalate complexes is provided, in which the product noble metal oxalate complexes are added to the reaction mixture as an auto-catalyst.
