A bone screw is provided having first and second threaded portions of different diameter separated by a middle portion that is unthreaded so that the bone screw may be inserted into a pair of adjacent bone fragments and used to compress the fragments together by driving the screw into a hole drilled in the fragments. An installation tool is also disclosed for threadably engaging one end of the bone screw and is used to initially drive the screw into the bone hole. Thereafter, a screwdriver may be inserted through the tool and into engagement with a recess in the bone screw and may be used to drive the screw fully into the bone and to separate the bone screw from the installation tool. A method of installation is further provided.

A bone plate having a shape of an 'X'. The bone plate includes an upper side, an underside facing the bone, a middle part and, adjoining thereon, a peripheral region, which encloses the four extensions of the 'X' and in which four plate boreholes are accommodated. The plate boreholes have means, which are suitable for the rigid, angularly stable anchoring of bone screws which may be introduced therein.

A device for manipulating bone fragments includes a bone screw includes a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis. The shaft includes a first end having a first threaded portion with a first core diameter, a first external diameter and a first pitch. The shaft includes a second end having a second threaded portion with a second core diameter, a second external diameter and a second pitch. The second end further has a tool engaging surface, wherein the first external diameter is no greater than the second core diameter, the first and second pitches are substantially equal, and a non-threaded middle segment between the first and second threaded portions, an outer diameter of the middle segment being smaller than the first core diameter, and wherein the shaft includes a cannulation extending therethrough disposed coaxial with the screw longitudinal axis. An installation instrument includes first and second ends, a longitudinal axis, and a bore extending along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis, the bore in communication with the first end of the instrument, wherein the bore has threads along at least a portion of a length thereof, the threads configured to mate with the second threaded portion of the bone screw so that rotating the installation instrument rotates the bone screw to drive the screw into a bone.

Bone screw

A bone plate () having an upper side (), a bone-sided lower side (), a first end (), a second end () and several plate holes () arranged between the two ends () and connecting the upper side () to the lower side (), the plate holes being provided for receiving bone screws. Two of the plate holes () are formed by a combination of two partially overlapping boreholes () of different type. The first () of the two boreholes is a circular cylindrical bore, having an internal thread () and a cylinder axis (). The second borehole () has a cone axis () and tapers from the upper side () to the lower side () in the form of a frustum of a cone. The second borehole () is provided with an internal thread (). The cylinder axis () is situated at a distance A from the cone axis (), where A is different than zero.

A bone clamp moving bone segments relative to each other. The clamp comprises a first and second branch and a bridge connecting the first and second branch. The bone clamp may have a first, undeformed state, where the branches may be angled or substantially parallel with respect to each other. The bone clamp may have a second, deformed state, where the branches may be moved from the first state. The bone clamp may be deformed using an instrument such as pliers. When the bone clamp is in the deformed state, the branches may be inserted into bone segments. Thereafter, the instrument may be disengage from the bone clamp and the clamp may return to its undeformed state. While returning to the first, undeformed, state the bone clamp may apply compressive or distraction forces on the bone segments, thereby moving the bone segments relative to each other.
