Acid-functionalized copolymers of methyl methacrylate having relatively high glass transition temperatures and molecular weights may be employed to manufacture articles having high light transmission values, low haze, high heat resistance, and high environmental stability, which are useful as optical protection films, zero-zero optical retardation films, and compensation films as well as lighting pipes and optical imaging lenses.

Acid-functionalized copolymers of methyl methacrylate and acrylic resin compositions based thereon

A polymeric (meth) acrylic composition including polymeric silicone particles and optionally polymeric (meth)acrylic particles. The polymeric silicone particles have a weight average particle diameter between 1 μm and 10 μm and the optional polymeric (meth)acrylic particles have a weight average particle diameter between 20 μm and 100 μm. The polymeric (meth) acrylic composition may be in the form of a masterbatch. A process for making the (meth)acrylic composition including polymeric silicone particles and polymeric (meth)acrylic particles from a polymeric (meth) acrylic masterbatch composition including polymeric silicone particles and optionally polymeric (meth)acrylic particles is provided.

Disclosed is a thermoplastic elastomer composition comprising a blend of at least two fluoropolymers. The first fluoropolymer has from 0 to 30 weight percent of a monomer J selected from the group consisting of hexafluoropropene (HFP), fluorinated or perfluorinated vinyl ethers, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, trifluoropropene, 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoro propene or combinations thereof. The second fluoropolymer has at least 30 weight percent, preferably at least 35 weight percent, of monomer T selected from the group consisting of hexafluoropropene (HFP), fluorinated or perfluorinated vinyl ethers, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, trifluoropropene, 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoro propene or combinations thereof.

Films having high light transmission values, low haze and high glass transition temperatures and useful, for example, as optical protection films and zero-zero optical retardation films, are prepared using one or more copolymers of methyl methacrylate having certain characteristics.

Transparent films based on resin components having a high glass transition temperature

The invention relates to high efficiency diffusion lighting coverings useful in LED lighting applications. The diffusing lighting coverings are made of organic diffusing particles homogeneously dispersed in a transparent polymer matrix. The primary organic diffusing particles are refractive index mis-matched to the matrix polymer. The refractive index contrast between the polymer matrix and diffusion particles, and particle size are selected to provide a high efficiency (minimized particle loading). The high efficiency diffusion coverings provides excellent light diffusion, high hiding properties and high light transmission. The secondary diffusion particles may optionally be added to further improve selected target properties of the covering. Nano-sized ZnO inorganic particles may also function as diffusion particles and optical brighteners as well UV stabilizers. Articles made of this translucent composition are useful in commercial and residential lighting, motor vehicle illumination (lights, panels), street lighting, displays and signs, desktop monitors, and LCD/LED TVs.

High efficiency diffusion lighting coverings

The invention relates to multilayer polymer structures having at least three layers. These layers include a polar capstock layer other than an acrylic, an olefinic substrate layer, and a tie layer. The tie layer is selected from olefinic acrylate copolymers, a block copolymer of vinyl aromatic monomer with an aliphatic conjugated diene or a derivative thereof, a copolymer of olefin and (meth)acrylic acid partially or fully in the salt form, a high impact polystyrene, and/or a vinyl cyanide-containing compound. Each layer could contain multiple sub-layers. The multilayer structure exhibits excellent structural integrity, excellent surface appearance, high impact strength, high scratch resistance, and excellent resistance to UV rays.

Multilayer polymeric structure

The invention relates to multi-layer thermoplastic composites, and in particular composites having fluoropolymer in the outer layer and a thermoplastic substrate layer. The fluoropolymer outer layer may either be a layer comprising a majority, and preferably 100 percent fluoropolymer, or may be a blend of a thermoplastic matrix with fluoropolymer at a level of from 5 to 60 weight percent, based on the total weight of all polymers. Especially useful thermoplastic matrices include acrylic polymers, and styrenic polymers, especially styrenic copolymers such as acrylonitrile/styrene/acrylate (ASA), acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) and styrene/acrylonitrile (SAN). While the fluoropolymer may be any fluoropolymer, thermoplastic fluoropolymers, such as polymers and copolymers of polyvinylidene fluoride are especially useful. The improved flame retardant composite of the invention is especially useful in cap layers over plastic substrates, such as for flame-retardant plastic decking, railings, posts, fencing, siding, roofing, and window profiles.

Thermoplastic composite

The invention relates to multilayer composites having improved weathering properties without reducing flame retardation properties. The composites have a fluoropolymer layer over a thermoplastic layer. The multilayer composite may be a fluoropolymer layer directly over a relatively flammable substrate or non-flammable substrate (like PVC), or it may be a fluoropolymer layer over a relatively flammable cap layer, over a substrate (that is flammable or non-flammable). The composite is formed using coating, coextrusion and/or lamination techniques. The multilayer composite is especially useful in articles having surfaces that are used in a relatively horizontal position, including decking, railings, roofing and window profiles. The composites provide improved weathering for the substrate without a reduction in flame-resistance, when compared to the substrate without the outer fluoropolymer layer. The multi-layer composite also provides enhanced chemical resistance, hardness, scratch and mar, and water resistance.

Multilayer composite

The invention relates to a multilayered pultruded structure having a weatherable cap layer over a pultruded substrate, adhered with an appropriate tie layer. The structure provides improved weatherability and surface quality for pultruded structures. The invention is especially useful to provide a weatherable pultruded polyurethane, with an acrylic or styrenic cap layer. The weatherable polyurethane (PU) pultrusion of the invention provides an increased modulus over polyester pultrusions, making the weatherable PU pultrusion useful in commercial applications, and applications requiring a higher transverse modulus.

The invention relates to the use of a high performance thermoplastic polymer binder material for immobilizing adsorptive materials, such as activated carbon, in gas storage devices. The use of these binders, especially polyamide binders, polytetrafluoroethylene binders, or polyvinylidene fluoride binders such as Kyblock&#xae; resin, provides for high sorbent packing density, low fouling solid structure that maximizes the volume of gas to the volume of the storage space.

High performance sorption binder for gas phase storage devices

The invention relates to a multi-layer structure having at least one inner layer containing an alloy of a biopolymer and an acrylic polymer and at least one outer layer containing a thermoplastic or thermoset polar polymer matrix. The combination of outer polar layer and an inner biopolymer/acrylic layer provides improved properties, such as improved adhesion, and improved mechanical properties. The multi-layer structure may be in the form of a sheet, a film, a tube or pipe, or a profile, and could be used by itself or as a cap-layer over a substrate.

Multilayer structures containing biopolymers

The invention relates to blend materials useful in LED lighting applications. The diffusing particle blend is a synergistic mixture of selected organic particles and selected inorganic particles of specific composition, loading, and a refractive index difference with the matrix polymer, that provide excellent light diffusion, high hiding properties and good light transmission. Articles made of this blend are useful in commercial and residential lighting, motor vehicle illumination (lights, panels), street lighting, displays and signs.

Optical diffusion blend materials for LED lighting

The invention relates to the use of a melt-in-place acrylic binder that is applied to a substrate in the form of a powder, followed by a fusing together of the binder powder by heat or radiation. Particulate filler is present either on the substrate, mixed with the binder powder, or admixed into the binder powder prior to fusion. The fused binder helps adhere the particulate fillers to the substrate, and may or may not cover the particulate filler.
