A method for drilling operation in a subterranean formation, including calculating, by a hardware processor and in response to determining that an magnitude of gyro data representing rotations of a drill bit in a bottom hole assembly (BHA) and a time derivative of the gyro data are within a pre-determined range, a drift parameter of the gyro data, analyzing, by the hardware processor, the gyro data based on the drift parameter to generate a stick-slip alert, and presenting the stick-slip alert.

Detecting stick-slip using a gyro while drilling

A technique physically amplifies strain to facilitate measurement of strain/displacement. A strain amplifying mechanism is mounted to a component being monitored for strain and comprises an input port and an output port. The strain amplifying mechanism is attached to the component such that the input port moves when the component undergoes strain. Movement of the input port causes movement of the output port over a distance greater than the physical movement of the input port. A strain sensor is coupled to the output port to detect its movement over the greater distance.

System and method of strain measurement amplification

A technique facilitates drilling of boreholes by enabling improved measurement of strain during drilling applications. A strain gauge is mounted on a drilling component of a drill string. The strain gauge is covered with a volume of liquid, and the liquid is enclosed at least in part with a flexible layer of material. The flexible layer of material is sufficiently flexible to provide a negligible pressure differential between the volume of liquid and the surrounding environment while drilling, thus enabling accurate functioning of the strain gauge.
