The present invention relates to an apparatus, which can be part of a pre-treatment system in a plant for the production of fuels, e. g. bio-ethanol, derived from plant biomass, e. g. first generation crops, such as grain, sugarcane and corn or second generation crops such as lignocellulosic biomass. The invention relates to an apparatus for processing, such as fluffing and mixing, at least two media, such as a solid, e. g. biomass, and a fluid, e. g. steam, so as to rendering the first medium susceptible to efficient receiving of energy and/or mass which is provided by localized release of the second medium. Although the description of the present invention focuses on biomass, it is envisaged that the invention is generally applicable to control the mixing of at least two media by crossing their stream of while dispersing at least one of them.

A reactor includes a tubular-shaped housing in which a stack of filter plates can be rotationally arranged. The cross-sectional area of the reactor container is, in the region of the stack of filter plates, a maximum of 40% greater than the cross-sectional area of the stack of filter plates. The longitudinal extension of the reactor housing is a multiple of the longitudinal extension of the stack of filter plates, such that inside the reactor, adjacent to the stack of filter plates, additional processing devices can be arranged. The rotating stack of filter plates ensures that the entire reactor is cross-flown in an intensive manner.

A filter device includes a housing () having at least two rotation bodies (,) which are arranged therein and are driven by a shaft (). The rotation bodies () are designed and arranged for producing a centrifugal pumping effect. A guidance device () is provided between the rotation bodies (), which connects the pressure side () of a first rotation body () to the suction side () of a rotation body () arranged therebehind in the flow direction (). The intermediate spaces between the rotation bodies are provided with a filter arrangement.

Filter device

A device is provided for fluid treatment, in particular for waste water treatment. The fluid is led along a surface () coated with biological material. A wiper element () is provided, which brushes the surface () not as a whole, but in paths. The path course is selected such that the coated surface () is successively brushed in sections.
