A control system for an engine comprising a turbocharger includes a cold light off catalyst (CLOC), a CLOC valve, and a controller. The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The controller is configured to determine an engine torque request; determine an intake manifold pressure target; determine whether an intake manifold pressure target is greater than a barometric pressure; command the CLOC valve to a first position whereby exhaust flow is routed, at least partially, to the CLOC in a CLOC mode based on the intake manifold pressure target is not greater than the barometric pressure; and command the CLOC valve to a second position whereby exhaust flow is routed fully to the turbocharger based on the intake manifold pressure target is greater than the barometric pressure.

Control of cold light off catalyst

A control system for an engine comprising a turbocharger includes a cold light off catalyst (CLOC), a CLOC valve, and a controller. The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The controller is configured to command the CLOC valve to a first position whereby exhaust flow is routed to the CLOC in a CLOC mode; determine, based on operation in the CLOC mode, a pressure of the turbine of the turbocharger; compare the determined pressure to a pressure threshold; determine a target position of the CLOC valve to mitigate oil leakage from the turbocharger during CLOC operation; and command the CLOC valve to the target position.

Turbocharger incorporating cold light off catalyst and valve positioning control

A control system for an engine comprising a turbocharger includes a cold light off catalyst (CLOC), a main catalyst, a CLOC valve, and a controller. The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The main catalyst is disposed downstream of the turbine and the CLOC. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The controller determines whether a temperature of the main catalyst is less than a threshold; commands a CLOC mode wherein the CLOC valve routes at least some exhaust to the CLOC based on the temperature being less than the threshold; determines whether a boost is requested at the engine; determines whether a full turbine input is needed to satisfy the requested boost; and disables the CLOC mode based on a determination that a full turbine input is needed.

Control of a cold light off catalyst to minimize tailpipe emissions

A control system for an engine comprising a turbocharger includes a cold light off catalyst (CLOC), a main catalyst, a CLOC valve, a first and second oxygen sensor, and a controller. The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The first oxygen sensor is disposed between the CLOC valve and the CLOC. The second oxygen sensor is disposed between the CLOC and the main catalyst. A position of the CLOC valve is determined and a priority is assigned to one of the first and second signals of the oxygen sensors based on the position of the CLOC valve. An engine out lambda is determined based on the first and second signals and assigned priority. An engine parameter is commanded.

Closed loop fuel control with a cold light off catalyst dual path system

A control system for an engine comprising a turbocharger includes a throttle valve, a cold light off catalyst (CLOC), a CLOC valve, and a controller. The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The controller is configured to command the CLOC valve to a first position whereby exhaust flow is routed to the CLOC in a CLOC mode; determine, based on operation in the CLOC mode, a pressure drop within the turbocharger; and command the actuator to move resulting in increased airflow into the engine while in the CLOC mode.

The CLOC is positioned in a bypass passage around a turbine of the turbocharger. The CLOC valve selectively routes exhaust flow from the engine between the turbine and the CLOC. The oil control valve regulates lubrication oil from the engine to the turbocharger. The controller is configured to command the CLOC valve to a first position whereby exhaust flow is routed to the CLOC in a CLOC mode; determine, based on operation in the CLOC mode, a pressure of the turbine of the turbocharger; compare the determined pressure to a pressure threshold; determine a target position of the oil control valve to mitigate oil leakage from the turbocharger during CLOC operation; and command the oil control valve to the target position.
