A turbine assembly can include a manifold that includes separate conduits for receipt of exhaust from a first number of cylinders and a second number of cylinders, turbine inlet passages and a valve seat disposed between the separate conduits and the turbine inlet passages; and a valve set in the valve seat that includes a rotational axis and an outer surface that includes separate recesses, where rotation of the valve controls exhaust flow from the separate conduits to the turbine inlet passages.

An assembly can include an exhaust gas turbine housing including an inner wall and an outer wall that define a first exhaust gas channel and a second exhaust gas channel to a turbine wheel space where the inner wall includes an inner wall end at the turbine wheel space and the outer wall includes an outer wall end at the turbine wheel space; a first flow body disposed adjacent to the inner wall end; a second flow body disposed adjacent to the outer wall end; and at least one set of adjustable variable geometry nozzle vanes that define nozzle throats that direct flow of exhaust gas from at least one of the exhaust gas channels to the turbine wheel space, where at least one of the first flow body and the second flow body includes a concave trailing surface that is defined in part by an arc of a circle.

Nozzle for partitioned volute

A twin-vaned nozzle ring for a turbine nozzle of a turbocharger nozzle ring is made by assembling the nozzle ring from three separately formed parts. A center part includes a first ring of circumferentially spaced first vanes and a second ring of circumferentially spaced second vanes, the first and second rings being axially spaced and integrally joined to each other. The first vanes are circumferentially offset from the second vanes, and exits from the first vane passages are radially aligned with and circumferentially interleaved with exits from the second vane passages. First and second side walls are provided as separate parts. Finally, the first side wall is joined to a distal or outer face of the first ring, and the second side wall is joined to a distal face of the second ring to complete the assembly.

Method for making a twin-vaned nozzle ring assembly for a turbocharger with twin-scroll turbine housing for directing exhaust gases from each scroll onto turbine wheel in interleaved fashion

A turbocharger has a meridionally divided turbine housing defining a first scroll and a first nozzle, and a second scroll and a second nozzle. The first and second nozzles are divided from each other by a shroud plate mounted within the nozzle, for isolating the exhaust gas streams flowing through the two nozzles from each other. A plurality of first vanes are disposed in the first nozzle, and plurality of second vanes are disposed in the second nozzle. A nozzle ring rotatably supports a plurality of vane shafts that extend across the first and second nozzles, passing through openings in the shroud plate. A first vane and a second vane are affixed to each vane shaft. Rotation of the vane shafts causes the first vanes and the second vanes to pivot for regulating the two streams of exhaust gas flowing through the first and second nozzles.

Turbocharger having a meridionally divided turbine housing and a variable turbine nozzle

A turbocharger has a turbine housing scroll that is meridionally divided into first and second scrolls. A nozzle ring disposed in the turbine nozzle has an array of circumferentially spaced first vanes and an array of circumferentially spaced second vanes. The first vane passages between first vanes are configured to blow exhaust gas onto the turbine blade leading edges. Likewise, the second vane passages are configured to blow exhaust gas on the turbine blade leading edges. The first and second vanes are circumferentially staggered relative to each other such that the turbine blade leading edges receive exhaust gas from the first and second blade passages in interleaved fashion about a circumference of the turbine wheel.

Turbocharger with twin-scroll turbine housing and twin vaned nozzle ring for directing exhaust gases from each scroll onto turbine wheel in interleaved fashion

A turbocharger has a meridionally divided turbine housing defining a first scroll and a first nozzle, and a second scroll and a second nozzle. The first and second nozzles are divided from each other by a shroud plate mounted within the nozzle, for isolating the exhaust gas streams flowing through the two nozzles from each other. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes are rotatably mounted at a radially inner side of the nozzles. Leading-edge portions of the vanes are slotted to receive the shroud plate when the vanes are pivoted open. Trailing-edge portions of the vanes are unslotted. A radially inner periphery of the shroud plate includes cutouts for abutting the trailing-edge portions of the vanes in the closed position, and includes contour portions for influencing a flow separation ratio of the turbine.

A turbine housing includes a volute flow passage with an inlet and an end that are spaced apart along a flow axis in a circumferential direction about an axis of rotation. The volute flow passage defines a plurality of cross sections arranged in series along the flow axis from the inlet to the end. The plurality of cross sections are taken normal to the flow axis. The plurality of cross sections have an area (A) and a centroid, and the centroid is spaced at a radial distance (R) from the axis of rotation. The volute flow passage has a sidewall angle distribution from the inlet to the end that is at least partly nonlinear. The volute flow passage has an A/R-distribution from the inlet to the end that is substantially linear. The volute flow passage has an A-distribution from the inlet to the end that is at least partly nonlinear.

Turbine assemblies and related turbocharger systems having direct turbine interfaces are provided. One exemplary turbine assembly includes a first turbine housing having an outlet portion defining a fluid outlet of a first turbine and a second turbine housing having an inlet portion defining a fluid inlet of a second turbine, wherein at least a portion of the inlet portion radially surrounds at least a portion of the outlet portion to provide a direct interface from the fluid outlet of the first turbine to the fluid inlet of the second turbine in an axial direction.

Turbocharger systems with direct turbine interfaces

Turbine assemblies and related turbocharger systems having direct turbine interfaces are provided. One exemplary turbine assembly includes a first turbine housing having an outlet portion defining a fluid outlet of a first turbine and a second turbine housing having an inlet portion defining a fluid inlet of a second turbine, wherein at least a portion of the outlet portion radially surrounds at least a portion of the inlet portion to provide a direct interface from the fluid outlet of the first turbine to the fluid inlet of the second turbine in an axial direction.
