An improved tool for installing an explosively driven fastener as well as an improved explosively driven fastener for use therewith are disclosed. The fastener includes a nail having a head with an explosive load attached thereto in a plastic cap that includes a buffer. The tool has a plurality of concentric cylinders and springs including a muzzle for receiving the fastener head and explosive load. A spring actuated firing pin ignites the load causing it to explode and drive the nail out of the tool. The explosion also automatically resets the tool. The tool and the fastener provide many advantages over existing explosively driven fasteners and the tools used to install them.

Various systems including brackets and associated wires are disclosed for suspending fixtures from ceilings and the like. The systems improve over the prior art in several ways. Attachment of the wire to the bracket is faster and easier. The attachment can be made more rigid. Several different components can be combined to adapt to different suspension requirements. Brackets can be provided with structure to make more stable connections to cement and masonry.

Methods and apparatus for suspending fixtures

The invention includes an angle bracket with a hole for a fastener and a flange for coupling a wire to the angle bracket. The flange is lanced and it is coupled to the wire by crimping. According to a first embodiment of the invention, the flange is provided with two horizontal lances. According to a second embodiment, the flange is provided with at least three alternating horizontal lances. According to a third embodiment, the flange is provided with a horizontal lance and a vertical lance. According to a fourth embodiment, the flange is provided with a vertical lance in the shape of a hook and an eyelet is provided for connecting the wire. According to a fifth embodiment, the flange is wrapped to form a slotted cylinder. The wire is inserted into the slotted cylinder which is then compressed and crimped onto the wire. According to a sixth embodiment, the bracket is provided with two wire connecting flanges. A seventh embodiment combines features of the second and sixth embodiments. A kit according to the invention includes a plurality of brackets, a plurality of pre-cut lengths of wire, and a combined crimping and testing tool.

The apparatus of the invention includes an angle bracket with a hole for a fastener and a flange with a hole for coupling a wire to the angle bracket. The flange is arranged to be substantially perpendicular to the axis of the fastener and substantially perpendicular to the axis of the wire. Six embodiments of a bracket according to the invention are disclosed. According to the invention a wire is provided with a deformation or attachment at one end which prevents it from passing completely through the hole in the flange of the bracket. Eight embodiments of a wire according to the invention are disclosed. The wires of the invention may be used with some prior art brackets with little or no modification to the bracket. An unmodified prior art bracket is shown in conjunction with wires according to the invention and a slightly modified prior art bracket is shown with a wire according to the invention.

A powder actuated fastening system that includes a powder actuated gun having detactably connected to the end thereof one of several differently constructed holders adapted to receive and support therein a fastener assembly which is forceably driven by the gun into a supporting structure. The fastener assembly in accordance with this invention comprises a member having a stud extended therethrough whereby the stud is rigidly secured to the member by friction. The member of such assembly may be formed of different configuration depending upon the ultimate function of the fastener assembly, and which system includes a complementary fastener holder detactably connected to the end of the gun to accommodate particular fastener assembly.
