Methods of document expansion for a speech retrieval document by a recognizer. A database of vectors of automatic transcriptions of documents is accessed and the vectors are truncated by removing all terms that are not recognizable by the recognizer to create truncated vectors. Terms in the vectors are then weighted to associate the truncated vectors with the untruncated vectors. Terms not recognized by the recognizer are then added back to the weighted, truncated vectors. The retrieval effectiveness may then be measured.

Document expansion in speech retrieval

A language recognition methodology is provided whereby any finite-state model of context may be used in a very general class of decoding cascades, and without requiring specialized decoders or full network expansion. The methodology includes two fundamental improvements: (1) a simple generalization, weighted finite-state transducers, of existing network models, and (2) a novel on-demand execution technique for network combination. With the methodology of the invention one or more of the network cascades are formulated as a finite state transducer, and is composed, for a selected portion of the network, with a next successively higher level of the network cascade to prescribe a mapped portion of that next successively higher level corresponding to the portion of the network cascade selected to be expanded.

On-demand language processing system and method

Myoelectric and wireless technologies are used for the control of a portable electronic device, such as a cellular telephone or a personal digital assistant (PDA). That is, a portable electronic device has a wireless myoelectric user interface. An apparatus includes a material which forms a forearm or wrist band, myoelectric sensors attached to the band, a digital processor coupled to the myoelectric sensors, and a wireless transmitter coupled to the digital processor. The apparatus is operative to sense and detect particular hand and/or finger gestures, and to broadcast control signals corresponding to the gestures for operative control of the portable electronic device.

Wireless myoelectric control apparatus and methods

The present invention provides a method of expanding a string of one or more digits to form a verbal equivalent using weighted finite state transducers. The method provides a grammatical description that expands the string into a numeric concept represented by a sum of powers of a base number system, compiles the grammatical description into a first weighted finite state transducer, provides a language specific grammatical description for verbally expressing the numeric concept, compiles the language specific grammatical description into a second weighted finite state transducer, composes the first and second finite state transducers to form a third weighted finite state transducer from which the verbal equivalent of the string can be synthesized, and synthesizes the verbal equivalent from the third weighted finite state transducer.
