A method and apparatus allows a user to selectively store (604) a portion of a received message in a selective call receiver (100). The selective call receiver (100) includes first and second memory elements (118) for storing the received message and the portion thereof, respectively. The second memory element has a plurality of partitions (122, 124, 126, 128) corresponding to a plurality of file types. The user defines (FIG. 5) the portion of the received message stored in the first memory element, which portion is to be stored in the second memory element, and then selects (602) one of the plurality of partitions (122, 124, 126, 128) for storing the defined portion of the received message. The defined portion of the received message is then stored (604) in the selected one of the plurality of partitions (122, 124, 126, 128).

A pager (400) capable of operating in a plurality of paging systems (210, 212, and 214) includes a receiver (404) for receiving information messages which include idle words from one of the paging systems. Upon receiving the information messages the pager (400) decodes the information messages in order to determine the system identification information contained in the idle word. The pager (400) then compares the decoded system identification information with the unique paging system identification number presently being utilized by the pager (400). If the system identification information matches the unique paging system identification number presently being utilized by the pager, the pager (400) remains in the present paging system. If the data does not match, the pager uses controller (410) to determine if any of the stored sets of system configuration parameters which are each associated with a unique paging system identification number matches the decoded system identification information. If a match is found, the controller (410) automatically changes the system configuration parameters to match those associated with the new paging system identification number.

A wrist watch pager (100) powered by a rechargeable battery (234) comprises an antenna having first and second antenna portions (102A and 102B) for receiving paging signals when the first and second portions (102A and 102B) are coupled together to form a loop antenna. The first and second antenna portions (102A and 102B) receive a charging voltage from a battery charger (120) directly coupled to the first and second antenna portions (102A and 102B) when the first and second antenna portions (102A and 102B) are uncoupled thereby disabling the loop antenna. A receiver (204) coupled to the loop antenna presents an alert in response to the paging signals. A device (230) coupled between the loop antenna and the receiver (204) blocks the charging voltage from the receiver (204). Another device (232) coupled between the loop antenna antenna and the rechargeable battery (234) blocks the received paging signal from the battery charger (120).

An apparatus for sensing the integrity of an antenna which is located within a wristband and which is coupled to a wrist worn communication device having a receiver, and an antenna sensing circuit which generates an antenna sensing signal. The antenna sensing circuit monitors the antenna sensing signal and derives an antenna integrity indication signal which indicates the integrity of the antenna. An indicating circuit is responsive to the antenna integrity indication signal and provides a sensible indication of the integrity of the antenna, such as a message indicating the antenna is open.

A paging system which provides both individual and information services includes a transmitter which transmits page call address and data periodically in batches to subscribing paging receivers. Each batch comprising a synchronization code followed by a predetermined plurality of sequential frames. Each paging receiver searches for both its individual service address and a first information service address in its corresponding assigned frame of each batch of a transmission period, and in response to reception of the first information service address, searches for a second information service address in a designated common frame of each batch of a transmission period. Individual and information service data messages are obtained from frames immediately subsequent the frame in which the respective individual and second information service addresses are found.
