A fuel combustion power generation system is provided operating as a closed loop Rankine cycle and with zero atmospheric emissions. The fuel is combusted with oxygen in a combustor to generate high temperature products of combustion. The products of combustion are routed to a first side of a heat exchanger. A second side of the heat exchanger has a working fluid of the closed loop Rankine cycle passed therethrough to boil the working fluid into a gas. The working fluid is then expanded, condensed back to a liquid and pumped back to high pressure for return to the heat exchanger the products of combustion enter a condenser, where gases are collected and liquids recirculated or released. The products of combustion can be expanded upstream of the heat exchanger. The fuel can be a gaseous fuel or a solid or liquid fuel, such as coal or biomass, with gasification before combustion.

Zero emissions closed rankine cycle power system

The power plant combusts a hydrocarbon fuel with oxygen to produce high temperature high pressure products of combustion. These products of combustion are routed through an expander to generate power. The products of combustion are substantially free of oxides of nitrogen because the oxidizer is oxygen rather than air. To achieve fast starting, oxygen, fuel and water diluent are preferably stored in quantities sufficient to allow the power plant to operate from these stored consumables. The fuel can be a gaseous or liquid fuel. The oxygen is preferably stored as liquid and routed through a vaporizer before combustion in a gas generator along with the hydrocarbon fuel. In one embodiment, the vaporizer gasifies the oxygen by absorption of heat from air before the air is routed into a separate heat engine, such as a gas turbine. The gas turbine thus operates on cooled air and has its power output increased.

Ultra low emissions fast starting power plant

A low or no pollution engine is provided for delivering power for vehicles or other power applications. The engine has an air inlet which collects air from a surrounding environment. At least a portion of the nitrogen in the air is removed. The remaining gas is primarily oxygen, which is then routed to a gas generator. The gas generator has inputs for the oxygen and a hydrocarbon fuel. The fuel and oxygen are combusted within the gas generator, forming water and carbon dioxide. The combustion products are then expanded through a power generating device, such as a turbine or piston expander to deliver output power for operation of a vehicle or other power uses. The combustion products are then passed through a condenser where the steam is condensed and the carbon dioxide is collected or discharged. A portion of the water is routed back to the gas generator. The carbon dioxide is compressed and delivered to a terrestrial formation from which return of the CO2 into the atmosphere is inhibited.

Hydrocarbon combustion power generation system with CO2 sequestration

A reheat heat exchanger is provided particularly for use in Rankine cycle power generation systems. The reheat heat exchanger includes a high pressure path between a high pressure inlet and a high pressure outlet. The reheat heat exchanger also includes a low pressure path between a low pressure inlet and a low pressure outlet. The two paths are in heat transfer relationship. In a typical power generation system utilizing the reheat heat exchanger, the high pressure inlet is located downstream from a source of high temperature high pressure working fluid. An expander is located downstream from the high pressure outlet and upstream from the low pressure inlet. A second expander is typically provided downstream from the low pressure outlet. The reheat heat exchanger beneficially enhances the efficiency of power generation systems, particularly those which utilize expanders having inlet temperatures limited to below that produced by the source of working fluid.

Reheat heat exchanger power generation systems

A low or no pollution power generation system is provided. The system has an air separator to collect oxygen. A gas generator is provided with inputs for the oxygen and a hydrocarbon fuel. The fuel and oxygen are combusted within the gas generator, forming water and carbon dioxide. Water or other diluents are also delivered into the gas generator to control temperature of the combustion products. The combustion products are then expanded through at least one turbine or other expander to deliver output power. The combustion products are then passed through a separator where the steam is condensed. A portion of the water is discharged and the remainder is routed back to the gas generator as diluent. The carbon dioxide can be conditioned for sequestration. The system can be optimized by adding multiple expanders, reheaters and water diluent preheaters, and by preheating air for an ion transfer membrane oxygen separation.

Low pollution power generation system with ion transfer membrane air separation

A combined cycle power system is provided which can convert an open combined cycle gas turbine into a reduced or zero emissions power system. The system includes a compressor which compresses air and combusts the air with a hydrocarbon fuel. The products of combustion and the remaining portions of the air form the exhaust which is expanded through a turbine. The turbine drives the compressor and outputs power. The exhaust exits the turbine and then is routed through a heat recovery steam generator. A bottoming cycle portion of the system includes a gas generator which combusts a hydrocarbon fuel with oxygen. Water is also entered into the gas generator where it is heated and combined with the products of combustion, before entering a bottoming turbine. The water is then separated and routed back to the gas generator after preheating within the heat recovery steam generator.

Semi-closed Brayton cycle gas turbine power systems

A power generation system is provided which converts chemical energy in one or more fuels into electrical and/or mechanical power. The system includes both fuel cells to directly convert electrical energy in a fuel into electrical power and at lest one combustor and expander to generate mechanical power, optionally than converted to electrical power in a generator. Fuel cell products disclosed from the fuel cell are entered into the combustor to be heated along with products of combustion created in the combustor and expanded in the expander along with the products of combustion.

Combined fuel cell and fuel combustion power generation systems

A semi-closed combined cycle power system is provided which can also convert an open combined cycle gas turbine into a non-polluting zero emissions power system. The prior art open combined cycle gas turbine includes a compressor which compresses air A&prime; and combusts the air A&prime; with a fuel, such as natural gas. The products of combustion and the remaining portions of the air form the exhaust E&prime; which is expanded through the turbine . The turbine drives the compressor band outputs power. The exhaust E&prime; exits the turbine and then can optionally be routed through a heat recovery steam generator to function as a combined cycle. According to this invention, the exhaust E&prime; is not emitted into the atmosphere, but rather is routed to a divider . The divider includes two outlets for the exhaust E&prime; including a return duct and a separation duct which both receive a portion of the exhaust E&prime;. The return duct routes a portion of the exhaust E&prime; back to the compressor . Before reaching the compressor , an oxygen duct adds additional oxygen to the exhaust E&prime; to form a gas mixture C which includes CO and steam from the exhaust E&prime; and oxygen from the oxygen duct 150. This gas mixture C has characteristics which mimic those of air, so that the compressor need not be modified to effectively compress the gas mixture C. The gas mixture C is compressed within the compressor and routed to the combustor where the fuel combusts with the oxygen of the gas mixture C&prime; and produces exhaust E&prime; which is substantially entirely CO and steam. This exhaust E&prime; is routed through the turbine and expanded to drive the compressor and output power. The exhaust E&prime; exits the turbine and is routed back to the divider , preferably by way of a heat recovery steam generator or other heat removal device, so that the semi-closed cycle operates as a combined cycle power system . The divider directs a portion of the exhaust E&prime; to a separation duct which leads to a condenser . In the condenser the exhaust E&prime; is separated by condensation of the steam/water portion of the exhaust and removal of the remaining CO as gas from the condenser . The only exhaust from the semi-closed power system is water and CO from the condenser. The CO exhaust is substantially pure and ready for appropriate further handling and disposal. Hence, no pollutants are emitted from the semi-closed power system . The return duct can include a partial condenser to condense a portion of the steam within the exhaust E&prime;. This condensed steam is then routed back through the heat recovery steam generator , where it is converted to steam. This steam can be injected through a steam injection port directly into the combustor to enhance the power output and efficiency of a steam injection power system variation of this invention.

The exhaust is not emitted into the atmosphere as with typical open combined cycles, but rather is routed to a divider. The divider splits the exhaust into either a return duct or a separation duct. The return duct routes a portion of the exhaust back to the compressor. Before reaching the compressor, an oxygen duct adds additional oxygen to the exhaust to form a gas mixture which includes and steam from the exhaust and oxygen from the oxygen duct. This gas mixture has characteristics which mimic those of air, so that the compressor need not be modified to effectively compress the gas mixture.

The remaining gas is primarily oxygen, which is then compressed and routed to a gas generator. The gas generator has an igniter and inputs for the high pressure oxygen and a high pressure hydrogen-containing fuel, such as hydrogen, methane or a light alcohol. The fuel and oxygen are combusted within the gas generator, forming water and carbon dioxide with carbon containing fuels. Water is also delivered into the gas generator to control the temperature of the combustion products. The combustion products are then expanded through a power generating device, such as a turbine or piston expander to deliver output power for operation of a vehicle or other power uses. The combustion products, steam and, with carbon containing fuels, carbon dioxide, are then passed through a condenser where the steam is condensed and the carbon dioxide is collected or discharged. A portion of the water is collected for further processing and use and the remainder is routed back to the gas generator. The carbon dioxide is compressed and cooled so that it is in a liquid phase or super critical state. The dense phase carbon dioxide is then further pressurized to a pressure matching a pressure, less hydrostatic head, existing deep within a porous geological formation, a deep aquifer, a deep ocean location or other terrestrial formation from which return of the CO2 into the atmosphere is inhibited.
