A system comprises an ultrasound subsystem and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) subsystem. The ultrasound subsystem applies pulses of focused ultrasound having one or more parameters to an identified location in a subject that is to receive treatment. The parameters are determined in accordance with a magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) treatment plan. The MRI subsystem acquires functional image data corresponding to the identified location concurrently with the applied pulses of focused ultrasound. The MRI subsystem obtains a reconstructed series of functional images of the subject using the functional image data. The functional images are indicative of a first region within the identified location in which neuronal activity has been modified by the applied pulses. The system is configured to adjust one or more parameters of the MRgFUS treatment plan using the reconstructed series of functional images.

Methods and systems for modifying electrical currents in neuronal circuits

Embodiments of the invention provide a system and method for resecting a tissue mass. The system for resecting a tissue mass includes a surgical instrument and a first sensor for measuring a signal corresponding to the position and orientation of the tissue mass. The first sensor is dimensioned to fit insider or next to the tissue mass. The system also includes a second sensor attached to the surgical instrument configured to measure the position and orientation of the surgical instrument. The second sensor is configured to receive the signal from the first sensor. A controller is in communication with the first sensor and/or the second sensor, and the controller executes a stored program to calculate a distance between the first sensor and the second sensor. Accordingly, visual, auditory, haptic or other feedback is provided to the clinician to guide the surgical instrument to the surgical margin.

System and method for a tissue resection margin measurement device

Embodiments of the invention provide a system and method for resecting a tissue mass. The system for resecting a tissue mass includes a surgical instrument and a first sensor for measuring a signal corresponding to the position and orientation of the tissue mass. The system also includes a second sensor attached to the surgical instrument configured to measure the position and orientation of the surgical instrument. The various embodiments described herein include methods, devices, and systems for providing ultrasound treatment to a patient. In one aspect, a method for adjusting a magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) treatment plan with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and an ultrasound system includes: (1) identifying a location in a subject that is to receive treatment; (2) applying pulses of focused ultrasound to the identified location with the ultrasound system in order to modulate a level of naturally occurring hormones; (3) concurrently with applying the pulses of focused ultrasound, acquiring with the MRI system functional image data from the subject; (4) obtaining a series of functional images of the subject using the functional image data, the functional images indicative of the modified neuronal activity; and (5) adjusting one or more parameters of the MRgFUS treatment plan using the reconstructed series of functional images.

A method for noninvasively changing the permeability of a region of a subject that includes a desired tissue is provided. More specifically, low-power focused ultrasound (FUS) is employed to alter the permeability of the glomerulus so as to alter the glomerular ultrafiltration coefficient. By employing FUS after administering a microbubble contrast agent to a subject, glomerular filtration is temporarily increased and the clearance of larger molecules, which are normally not filtered by the kidney, is allowed. This method offers new treatment opportunities for renal disease management.

Method for modifying glomerular permeability and function with focused ultrasound

A method for modifying neuronal activity in a subject with focused ultrasound pulses ('FUP') is provided. Such a methods is applicable for research, treatment, and diagnosis of psychiatric, neurological, and neuroendocrine disorders whose biological mechanisms include neuronal circuits in the brain. The application of focused ultrasound pulses is generally via multiple ultrasound transducers that are housed in a cap worn by the subject. The application of FUP at different tone burst duration, total sonication duration, and pulse repetition frequency settings results in either the inducement of either an increase or decrease in neuronal activity.

Methods for modifying electrical currents in neuronal circuits

A capsule includes a main body with at least one tail connected to the main body. At least two coils are disposed on each tail such that the coils are responsive to a magnetic field interacting with the coils such that a force is exerted on the tail. The capsule is controlled through application of a varying magnetic field with a constant current in the coils and/or by providing varying a current in the coils that interact with a constant magnetic field. The capsule can be disposed in a cavity, and the magnetic field can be provided from outside the cavity to affect movement of the capsule. An MRI device can be configured to control and image the capsule.

Steerable capsule apparatus and method

The present invention is directed to devices and systems used in magnetic imaging environments that include an actuator device having an elastomeric dielectric film with at least two electrodes, and a frame attached to the actuator device. The frame can have a plurality of configurations including, such as, for example, at least two members that can be, but not limited to, curved beams, rods, plates, or parallel beams. These rigid members can be coupled to flexible members such as, for example, links wherein the frame provides an elastic restoring force. The frame preferably provides a linear actuation force characteristic over a displacement range. The linear actuation force characteristic is defined as &#xb1;20% and preferably 10% over a displacement range. The actuator further includes a passive element disposed between the flexible members to tune a stiffness characteristic of the actuator. The passive element can be a bi-stable element. The preferred embodiment actuator includes one or more layers of the elastomeric film integrated into the frame. The elastomeric film can be made of many elastomeric materials such as, for example, but not limited to, acrylic, silicone and latex.

Elastomeric actuator devices for magnetic resonance imaging

Apparatus and method for generating and displaying undistorted images of a field of view containing undesirable motion and/or time varying magnetic field inhomogeneities, uses a time series of magnetic resonance (MR) image signals, corresponding to a time series of MR images, generated by a single-shot imaging technique without shot-to-shot phase encoding. Signals are stored and analyzed to identify missing and/or deteriorated images (including image portions, image lines or image line segments). Identified missing and/or deteriorated images are compensated for by replacement, repair or otherwise. MR image signals representative of a specified time series are selected. Then, selected signals of corresponding portions of the field of view are averaged. The invention may be used to present: a continuously updated time series of images; a time series of images with only a specified portions of the image updated in each display; or an entire time series of images re-created in any desired sequence.

Continuous magnetic resonance line-scan imaging in the presence of motion and varying magnetic field inhomogeneities within the field of view

The present invention describes methods for the treatment of joint diseases characterized by unwanted pannus, e.g., arthritis. Image-guide methods and apparatus for ultrasound delivery of compounds through the blood-brain barrier to selected locations in the brain target a selected location in the brain and applying ultrasound to effect in the tissues and/or fluids at that location a change detectable by imaging. At least a portion of the brain in the vicinity of the selected location is imaged, e.g., via magnetic resonance imaging, to confirm the location of that change. A compound, e.g., a neuropharmaceutical, in the patient's bloodstream is delivered to the confirmed location by applying ultrasound to effect opening of the blood-brain barrier at that location and, thereby, to induce uptake of the compound there.

Methods and apparatus for image-guided ultrasound delivery of compounds

A virtual internal cavity inspection system non-invasively provides images of cavities of a subject from a viewpoint within the cavity. An acquisition unit acquires imaging information about internal structures of a subject. This imaging information is segmented into separate structures, and a 3D surface model is constructed. An operator views an image of the 3D model to select a goal viewpoint and a start viewpoint. A viewpoint path is created linking the start viewpoint and the goal viewpoint. Images are created with a viewpoints along the viewpoint path. A variety of additional visualization techniques aid the viewer's localization of the current image viewpoint, and its relation to the subject.

Virtual internal cavity inspection system

A magnetic resonance imaging device is used to provide the static magnetic field for transducers. The static magnetic field in combination with electric current pulses energize phased arrayed transducers to generate acoustic waves or motion. The transducers can be arranged in the magnetic resonance imaging device static magnetic field to focus acoustic shock waves for the disintegration of target calculi in extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. The magnetic resonance imaging device is also used for target localization and monitoring of the mechanical energy effects of the transducers. In further embodiments, the transducers include coils that are implantable within a subject body and can be moved in the magnetic resonance imaging device's static magnetic field.
