An oxychlorination catalyst is described which is constituted by porous particles of microspheroidal, or at least microcrystalline, alumina impregnated with cupric chloride and with the chloride of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal, in which the copper and the alklai or alkaline-earth metal are uniformly distributed over the entire surface area of the particles. The method for the preparation of the catalyst is also described. The catalyst enables oxychlorination of ethylene to dichloroethane to be achieved with improved fluodynamic behavior of the fluidized catalytic bed and with improved conversions and selectivity towards the useful reaction product.

A process for the preparation of a catalyst which is highly active in the polymerization of gaseous ethylene is described the process comprising the steps of spray drying an ethanolic solution of MgCl.sub.2 to obtain MgCl.sub.2 particles of from 3 to 100 microns in size and with a residual alcoholic OH-groups content of from 1.5% to 20% by wt., the MgCl.sub.2 in said particles having an X-ray spectrum with a maximum peak at 10.8 angstrom, reacting said particles with a titanium halide in liquid or vapor phase and mixing the obtained reaction product with an alkylaluminium or an alkylaluminium halide in such amount to obtain an atomic ratio Al:Ti of from 100:1 to 5,000:1.

Recovery of molybdenum from a solid mixture, such as an exhausted catalyst, containing molybdenum in the oxide form or in the form of molybdic ions and other metallic compounds. The mixture is contacted with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to solubilize molybdenum in the form of an alkali metal molybdate, and after filtration the aqueous solution of alkali metal molybdate thus obtained is contacted with a strong cationic exchange resin to convert said molybdate into molybdic acid.

Ziegler catalytic system formed of an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Periodic System in combination with a transition metal compound supported on a carrier. The carrier is prepared by reacting magnesium chloride with an aliphatic alcohol and a fluorine-containing compound at 100.degree.-200.degree. Preparation of a catalyst based on molybdenum and iron oxides by precipitation from a soluble molybdenum compound and a soluble ferric salt, with separation of the precipitate from its mother waters and washing with deionized water. Molybdic ions are recovered from the mother waters and washing waters by contacting the latter with a salified anionic exchange resin, which is then contacted with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to yield an aqueous solution of alkali metal molybdate. The molybdenum thus recovered may be recycled to the precipitation step upon conversion of the molybdate into molybdic acid by treatment with a strong cationic exchange resin, and possible conversion of the acid into ammonium paramolybdate.

An oxychlorination catalyst active in the production of dichloroethane from ethylene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen, consisting of copper chloride on a granular support consisting of alumina in the crystallographic form eta, having a total volume of pores of from 0.3 to 0.5 ml/g and a surface area of from 250 to 400 m.sup.2 /g with at least 90% of said volume attributable to pores with a radius of less than 40 A and at least 90% of said surface area attributable to pores with a radius of less than 30 A.

0-cresol and 2,6-xylenol are prepared by flowing a gaseous stream of methanol and phenol in a molar ratio of phenol to methanol of from 1:1 to 1:9 through a fluidized bed of alumina particles at a temperature of from 200.degree. to 400.degree. C., said alumina being in the eta, gamma or chi crystallographic form, having a surface area of from 100 to 500 m.sup.2 /g and an overall pore volume of from 0.3 to 0.6 ml/g and having been pre-treated with a stream of air or inert gas at a temperature of the order of 500.degree. C. for at least 2 hours.

Ziegler catalytic system for the polymerization of olefins, formed by the combination of an organo-metallic compound and a compound of a heavy metal supported on a carrier. C. to substantially complete reaction of the acetone, separating the acidic agent from the reaction product, bringing the product freed from acidic agent into contact with a material chosen from between activated carbon and active earths at a temperature in the range of from about 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. for a time in the range of from about 1 to 120 minutes and distilling the product obtained in the treatment with the active material to recover the 2,2-(4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl-propane.
