The invention relates to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with gas flow lift valves actuated by electromagnetic actuators and controlling the intake and the exhaust of the cylinder combustion chambers. The cross-sectional area of the actuators allocated to the intake lift valves which is perpendicular to the axial direction of the lift valves is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the actuators allocated to the exhaust lift valves. If the intake lift valves and the exhaust lift valves are arranged in series one after the other in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the internal combustion engine, the width of the intake actuators measured in the plane of the actuator cross-sectional area and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the internal combustion engine is smaller than that of the exhaust actuators. If two intake lift valves and two exhaust lift valves each are provided per cylinder, the distance between the two cylinder exhaust lift valves measured in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the internal combustion engine equals the distance between the two cylinder intake lift valves. An ignition spark provided between the plane of the exhaust lift valves and the plane of the intake lift valves is at least slightly inclined towards the intake actuators with its longitudinal axis.

Multicylinder internal combustion engine with gas flow lift valves actuated by electro-magnetic actuators

The multiple actuator for an electromechanically actuated valve has a housing and a plurality of armature shafts extending through the housing. Each of the armature shafts carry an armature, and two electromagnets which both lie inside the housing. Two springs act on each armature, forcing it into a position of repose between the electromagnets. This configuration makes optimum use of the available basic area above a valve which is to be driven. The armature has a maximum surface area, and optimum dissipation of heat through thermal conduction is possible via the corresponding housing underside.

Electromagnetic multiple actuator

A method and device for cooling an electromagnetic actuator device of an internal combustion engine valves. A fluid stream circulating in the internal combustion engine, especially a lubricating oil stream, is passed through each electromagnetic actuator device to cool the actuator. The amount of the fluid stream passed through the actuator is variable and is adjusted by a suitable valve arrangement in such a way that a critical component temperature of the actuators is not exceeded. An electrical actuator parameter, such as the current flowing through the coils of the actuator, which corresponds to the component's temperature is determined in an electronic control unit associated with the actuators, and is compared in the electronic control unit with the critical component temperature or a corresponding critical electrical parameter. The electronic control unit controls the valve arrangement to provide the required stream of cooling fluid.
