The method and the apparatus of the invention serve to shift at least some sheets of successive stacks of overlapping sheets so that the originally straight holes which are provided along one marginal portion of each stack are converted into arcuate passages adapted to more readily receive the convolutions of spirals serving to pivotably couple the sheets of the stacks to each other. This is accomplished by inserting into one or both ends of some or all of the holes a discrete pin-shaped displacing member which is thereupon pivoted to thus shift at least some of the sheets relative to the neighboring sheets. In order to speed up the shifting of sheets, the displacing member or members is or are pivoted during withdrawal from the respective hole or holes to move its or their tips along arcuate paths at least approximating the curvatures of the convolutions which are to be introduced into the thus converted holes.

Method of and apparatus for gathering stacks of sheets and the like

Apparatus for introducing magnetic spirals into rows of neighboring perforations in the spines of stacks of overlapping sheets which are to form discrete calendars, memo pads or analogous commodities employs an elongated guide for a continuous magnetic coil spring. The coil spring is rotated about its longitudinal axis and is moved lengthwise so that its convolutions enter successive perforations of the row of perforations in the stack being held in the guide. The guide embodies or cooperates with magnets which maintain the convolutions of the coil spring in the path defined therefor by the guide. The magnets can be embedded in antimagnetic tubes forming part of or constituting the guide.

Apparatus for coupling stacked sheets

An apparatus for converting a length of metallic or other wire into a series of successive helical wire binders and for threading successive binders into rows of holes in the spines of successive stacks of sheets at a binding station includes an elongated guide defining an at least substantially continuous path for the wire from a wire inserting station to the binding station. The guide includes a rotary convoluting tool at the inserting station and a stationary cylindrical worm coaxial with the tool and extending from the latter to the binding station. Successive foremost binders are threaded into the rows of holes in successive stacks at the binding station and are severed from the respective following binders by a set of knives when the threading steps are completed.
