An electronics assembly including a plurality of midplanes positioned between and coupled to a plurality of electronic components at one side of the plurality of midplanes and at least one electronic component at an opposite side of the plurality of midplanes in a manner so that the midplanes are vertically oriented in parallel relative to each other so as to define spaces therebetween. The midplanes each include electrical traces configured to send signals among and between the plurality of electronic components at the one side of the midplanes and the at least one electronic component at the opposite side of the midplanes.

Distributed midplanes

A computer system including a frame, components and a pair of stacked controllers. The system also includes a plurality of midplanes positioned between the components and the controllers where each midplane includes a component edge and a controller edge, a first midplane connector coupled to the component edge and a second midplane connector coupled to the controller edge, where the first midplane connector is coupled to one of the component connectors and the second midplane connector is coupled to one of the controller connectors so that the midplanes are vertically oriented in parallel so as to define spaces therebetween. In one embodiment, the computer system is a data storage system, the components are storage drives and the controllers are storage controllers.

Distributed midplane for computer system

A data storage system including a frame, storage drives and a pair of stacked storage controllers. The system also includes a plurality of midplanes each having a PCB with opposing side surfaces, a front edge, a rear edge and a plurality of electrical traces. Each midplane further includes a first midplane connector coupled to the front edge, a second midplane connector coupled to the rear edge and a third midplane connector coupled to the rear edge, where the first connector is coupled to drive connectors and some of the electrical traces, the second connector is coupled to a controller connector and some of the electrical traces and the third connector is coupled to another one of the controller connectors and some of the electrical traces so that the midplanes are vertically oriented in parallel to define spaces therebetween relative to a front to rear direction of the frame.

Distributed midplane for data storage system enclosures

A server includes an adapter device, multiple storage modules and multiple controllers. The adapter device includes a base circuit board having opposite first and second surfaces, multiple first connectors disposed on the first surface along a first direction and connected to the base circuit board, and multiple second connectors disposed on the second surface along the first direction in pairs, each of which is arranged along a second direction, is connected to the base circuit board and is disposed between adjacent two of the first connectors. Each of the storage modules is connected to a corresponding first connector. Each of the controllers is connected to a corresponding second connector.

Server

A computing system including a chassis and a canister slidably insertable within the chassis, where the canister includes first and second angled slots. A CPU module mounted within the canister includes a plurality of first connectors and a plurality of I/O modules are positioned within the chassis and include a second connector. A plurality of riser cards including a third connector coupled to a bottom edge and a fourth connector coupled to a rear edge, where the third connector on each riser card is connected to one of the first connectors and the fourth connector on each riser card is connected to one of the second connectors. Actuation of ejector levers pivotally mounted to the bottom panel of the chassis cause pins to move in the angled slots and the canister to move relative to the chassis so as to connect and disconnect the second and fourth connectors.

Packaging of vertically oriented orthogonally connected systems

A computing system including a housing assembly having a front and a rear, a CPU module positioned towards the front of the housing assembly and including a plurality of I/O connectors, and a plurality of I/O modules positioned towards the rear of the housing assembly, where each I/O module includes a second I/O connector. The computing system also includes a plurality of riser cards each having a PCB with opposing side surfaces, a front edge, a rear edge, a top edge, a bottom edge, a third I/O connector coupled to the bottom edge and a fourth I/O connector coupled to the rear edge. The third I/O connector on each riser card is connected to one of the first I/O connectors and the fourth I/O connector on each riser card is connected to one of the second I/O connectors so that the riser cards are oriented in parallel with each other.
