This specification discloses non-aqueous solvent, pigmented ink formulations that are suitable for the electronic and aerospace industries and form printed marks that are resistant to smearing and dissolution by organic solvents commonly used in overcoatings in this industry and others. These ink formulations are based on use of an acidic resin with an inherent acid value of at least about 25 mg KOH/g, preferably at least partially neutralized by a quaternary ammonium hydroxide and/or alcohol amine acid neutralizing or modifying agent.

Pigmented inkjet ink with high acid number acrylic resin

Embodiments of the invention relate to ink compositions suitable for applications in the printing industry, for example continuous inkjet printing, including ultra-high speed continuous inkjet printing. The ink compositions use volatile organic solvents, a colorant, and one or more binder resins including a resin that is a phenolic resole resin, wherein the ink composition is free of methanol, halogens, halogenated compounds and bisphenol-A. A phenolic resole resin of the ink composition preferably contains less than 0.1% by weight of free formaldehyde. The one or more binder resins including the phenolic resole resin may be present in an amount that is from about 5% to about 30% by weight of the ink composition.

Continuous inkjet ink composition

A thermal ink jet ink composition include a volatile organic solvent, a binder resin, a dye, a humectant in an amount less than 40% by weight of the thermal ink jet ink composition, and an additive for extending the decap time. The additive is present in an amount greater than 0.1% by weight of the thermal ink jet ink composition. The additive is selected from plasticizers, surfactants, aliphatic hydrocarbons, drying oils and mixtures thereof. The additive does not phase separate from the ink jet composition during application of the ink to a substrate in thermal ink jet printing.

Thermal ink jet ink composition

An ink jet ink composition includes an organic solvent, a binder, and a colorant. The colorant is selected from at least a first pigment and a second pigment. If the ink composition comprises carbon black, the carbon black is present in an amount less than 30% by weight of the total pigment content.

Pigmented ink jet ink composition

An ink jet ink composition includes ethanol, a binder, a conductive agent, and a colorant. The ethanol is present in an amount at least 70% by weight of the ink composition. The binder is not a polyamide resin, a hydroxyaromatic resin, or a phenolic resin. The binder is present in an amount between 2% and 15% by weight of the ink composition. Water, if present, is in an amount less than 5% by weight of the ink composition.

Ethanol-based ink composition

Disclosed are opaque ink jet ink compositions and a method of printing that produce messages having a good contrast on darkly colored substrates, particularly darkly colored glass substrates, and that do not smear or degrade when exposed to moisture and/or hot and cold humid conditions, or when exposed to ice water or water under sterilizing conditions. The ink jet ink compositions comprise one or more organic solvents, one or more white pigments, one or more hydrophobic conductive agents, and one or more binder resins. In an embodiment of the ink jet ink composition, at least one binder resin comprises an acrylic or styrene acrylic resin. In another embodiment, the ink jet ink composition is free of polyamines. The ink jet ink composition may also include a glass adhesion promoter.

Opaque ink jet ink composition

Disclosed is an ink jet ink composition comprising one or more organic solvents, an acidic resin, a polyamine, an opaque pigment, and a hydrophobic conductive agent. The ink jet ink composition of the present invention has one or more of the following advantages. The ink jet ink composition has a short ink dry time, the ink is able to print on glass under cold and/or not cold temperatures, and under humid and/or dry conditions; the printed messages have excellent adhesion to the substrate, and the printed message can be removed by a caustic wash.

The present invention provides an ink jet ink composition suitable for use in continuous ink jet printing comprising a liquid vehicle, a binder resin, a colorant, and optionally a surfactant. The liquid vehicle includes an organic solvent or blend of solvents having an evaporation rate less than about 1.2, relative to n-butyl acetate standard which has an evaporation rate of 1.0. The present invention further provides a method for eliminating or reducing make-up consumption in continuous ink jet printing. The present invention further provides a process of continuous ink jet printing which is free or substantially free of make-up consumption.

Continuous ink jet printing ink composition

The present invention provides a jet ink composition comprising a volatile organic solvent, an oil, one or more binder resins which are soluble in the volatile organic solvent, and a colorant. The ink composition is fast drying and provides excellent adhesion to non-porous substrates. Printers, such as drop-on-demand ink jet printers, employing the ink composition can operate without nozzle clogging even after long non-printing intervals. The present invention further provides a method for reducing clogging of a nozzle orifice in an ink jet printer comprising printing with an ink composition that includes an oil that forms a continuous oil phase which acts as the boundary layer between the air outside the nozzle orifice and the ink inside the nozzle during non-printing intervals. The present invention further provides a process for jet ink printing onto a substrate comprising projecting a stream of ink droplets of the ink composition of the present invention to the substrate and controlling the direction of the droplets so that the droplets form the desired printed image on the substrate.

Ink jet ink composition

The present invention provides a jet ink composition suitable for application onto a substrate comprising an ink carrier, a colorant, a polyol, an aldehyde-based cross-linking agent, and a catalyst that promotes a reaction between the cross-linking agent, the polyol, and the substrate. The present invention further provides a process of jet ink printing onto a substrate comprising projecting a stream of ink droplets to said substrate, controlling the direction of the droplets so that the droplets form the desired printed image on the substrate, and heating the image to obtain a cured printed image. Examples of preferred cross-linking agents are modified melamine formaldehyde resin and modified urea formaldehyde resin. The substrates preferably possess carboxyl, hydroxyl, amide, or sulfhydryl groups. An example of a preferred substrate is cellulose. The cross-linking reaction is carried out at relatively moderate temperatures and at high speeds. The printed image has excellent adhesion to substrates, abrasion resistance, crinkling resistance, water resistance, and heat resistance.
