An online system tracks stores information identifying content provided by third party systems and accessed by online system users as well as interactions with advertisements performed by online system users. When the online system identifies an opportunity to present an advertisement to a viewing user, the online system identifies content from third party systems accessed by the viewing user and content from third party systems accessed by additional online system users who interacted with advertisements. A score is computed for various advertisements based at least in part on correlations between content from third party systems accessed by the viewing user and content from third party systems accessed by additional online system users who interacted with advertisements. The online system selects candidate advertisements to evaluate for presentation to the viewing user based on the scores.

A server offloads one or more tasks to a first media gateway. The server receives, from the first media gateway that is receiving a video stream of a television channel, a first message that indicates that the first media gateway is eligible to process a request for media content of the television channel that otherwise would be processed by the server. The server receives, from a second media gateway, a request for media content of the television channel. The server transmits, to the second media gateway, a redirection response that instructs the second media gateway to request the media content from the first media gateway.

Offloading a distribution server task to a media gateway

When the social networking system selects an advertisement for presentation to the user by a client device, a content identifier associated with the selected advertisement is stored in an advertisement history associated with the user. When the user performs a conversion event associated with the selected advertisement, the social networking system receives a content identifier and a user identifier from a client device used that performed the conversion event and retrieves the user's advertisement history. If the retrieved advertisement history includes a content identifier for the selected advertisement matching the content identifier received from the client device and a time between the conversion event and providing the selected advertisement to the client device is less than a threshold time period, a fee is determined for presentation of the selected advertisement.
