The disclosure is related to systems and methods of data recovery using frame matching and erasure windowing. Aspects involve using frame matching in conjunction with erasure windowing to overcome data corruption in a set of data to allow recovery of the set of data. When a synchronization mark indicating the position of a set of data in a superset of data is corrupted, frame matching in conjunction with erasure windowing are used to enable recovery of the set of data by applying one or more frame windows and one or more erasure windows to data including the set of data to recover the set of data.

Data recovery using frame matching and erasure windowing

A data storage device can have one or more data bits that are stored on a data storage medium and accessed with a transducing head. The data bits may be organized on the data storage medium to provide a surface data capacity. A performance degradation can be predicted for the transducing head by a controller connected to the transducing head. In response to the predicted performance degradation, the surface data capacity of the data storage medium is decreased.

A method and device are provided that use a sequencer in the device to control interactions on an interface bus. The sequencer is programmed to interrupt a co-processor before execution of a command. Based on the interrupt signal and a stored error mode page, a false error condition is initiated by further programming the sequencer to operate abnormally. After recovery from the error condition, the sequencer is reprogrammed to operate normally.

In a method for predicting failure of a disc drive during operation of the disc drive, a write fault count is maintained that corresponds to write faults encountered during write operations to a disc of the disc drive. Additionally, a frequency domain representation of a position error signal of a head of the disc drive is obtained. Finally, failure of the disc drive is predicted based on the write fault count and the frequency domain representation of the position error signal. Another aspect of the present invention relates to a disc drive that is capable of performing the above-described method.
