The technology disclosed herein pertains to a system and method for storing data on a storage media using both down-track super parity and cross-track super parity. Specifically, a method disclosed herein provides for generating down-track super parity values for data on the plurality of tracks and storing the down-track super parity values on a down-track super parity row of the storage block and generating cross-track super parity values for data on the plurality of rows and storing the cross-track super parity values on a cross-track upper parity track, wherein the cross-track super parity value for any given row is generated by inputting the data on the given row into an exclusive-OR (XOR) gate.

The circuit may perform a write retry to continue the write operation starting at a next sector contiguously following the selected sector, without attempting to write the selected sector again, during a second revolution of the magnetic disc.

Apparatus and method for managing data in a hybrid data storage device. In some embodiments, a hybrid data storage device operates in a normal mode in which data transfer commands received from a host device are serviced by a top level controller circuit which directs a first subset of the received data transfer commands to a non-volatile rotatable recording memory and a second subset of the received data transfer commands are directed to a non-volatile solid-state memory. The controller circuit transitions to a performance mode responsive to a detected first parameter so that subsequently received data transfer commands are directed exclusively to the solid-state memory. The controller circuit terminates the performance mode and resumes the normal mode responsive to a detected second parameter.

A method includes storing a data group in a first zone of a plurality of radial zones of a data storage disc. Each different one of the plurality of zones has a different throughput level. The method further includes obtaining information related to an access frequency of the data group stored in the first zone of the plurality of zones. Based on the information related to the access frequency of the data group and the different throughput levels of the different zones, a determination is made as to whether to migrate the data group from the first zone of the plurality of zones to a second zone of the plurality of zones.

Media cache cleaning

Systems and methods for maximizing shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drive capacity are described. In one embodiment, the SMR drive may include a main store to store user-accessible data, a media cache and media scratchpad to store internal data temporarily for internal operations, and a storage controller to process read and write requests. In some cases, the main store comprises a shingled media partition and an unshingled media partition. The storage controller may designate one or more data tracks from the shingled media partition as temporary data track guard bands. In some embodiments, a track range is selected based at least in part on at least one of an amount of data in the media cache, a size of the new data in the media cache, and an association between the new data in the media cache and data currently stored within the selected track range.

Maximize SMR drive capacity

A storage device performs a background operation involving seeking a read/write head between inner and outer diameters of a disk of the storage device. During the seeking, adjacent test tracks are written at a diameter between the inner and outer diameters of the disk. The adjacent test tracks are written using varying levels of laser power applied to the disk via the read/write head. An optimum value of the laser power is determined based on reading at least one of the adjacent test tracks.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording device capable of laser calibration during a background operation

Systems and methods are disclosed for performing rewrite operations on recording bands of a data storage medium. In some embodiments, a storage device may receive a write request to be recorded to a band including a plurality of contiguous data storage areas (e.g. tracks) spanning from a first storage area to a last storage area. The device may determine a target area of the band to which to record the data, and perform a partial rewrite operation on less than all data storage areas of the band when the target area is not within a threshold number of data storage areas from the first storage area. In some embodiments, the rewrite operation may include reading data recorded in a first arrangement from the target band, modifying the data, and recording the modified data to the band in a second arrangement including a physical recording order different than the first arrangement.

Rewrite operation for recording bands

Systems and methods are disclosed for performing a rewrite operation on recording bands of a data storage medium. In some embodiments, data may be read from a target band including a plurality of tracks, and modified. A portion less than all of the modified data is stored to a nonvolatile memory, and all of the modified data is written to the target band. In some embodiments, modified data corresponding to the first two tracks of the target band is stored to the nonvolatile memory, and modified data corresponding to the third track of the target band is written back to the first physical track. Each track may be written in order, ending with the modified data corresponding to the first two tracks. The result may be that data for each track in the band has shifted up two tracks, with data for the first two tracks moved to the end.

In a particular embodiment, a controller is adapted to perform a garbage collection operation to remove redundant data, to predict a performance parameter associated with performance of the garbage collection operation, and to abort the garbage collection operation when the predicted performance parameter exceeds a threshold.

System and method of garbage collection in a memory device

In a particular embodiment, a controller is adapted to control read/write access to a storage media including a pre-allocated area having multiple meta-blocks. The controller includes logic adapted to control the multiple meta-blocks as a first in first out (FIFO) circular queue. The logic selects one or more meta-blocks from the multiple meta-blocks based on an order associated with the FIFO circular queue and selectively writes a logical block address (LBA) mapping table to the selected one or more meta-blocks.

System and method of managing metadata

In a particular embodiment, a controller is disclosed that is adapted to control read/write access to a storage media. The controller includes data corruption detection logic to reconstruct a logical block address (LBA) lookup table from metadata stored at the storage media upon restart and re-initialization after a power loss event. The controller further includes duplicate conflict resolution logic to identify a valid data block from multiple data blocks that refer to a single LBA. The duplicate conflict resolution logic counts a first number of valid physical pages and a second number of different sectors in each of the multiple data blocks. The duplicate conflict resolution logic selects the valid data block from the multiple data blocks based on at least one of the first and second numbers.
