The present disclosure generally relates to improved lifetime of a data storage device utilizing an energy assist element. Rather than applying the same current to each energy assist element of a device, each energy assist element has a write current specific to the energy assist element. The unique applied current results in the corresponding energy assist elements having substantially the same temperature during operation. Obtaining substantially the same temperature during operation provides predictable and repeatable device performance and increases the lifetime of the entire data storage device as all energy assist elements should have substantially the same lifetime.

The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The head includes a main pole at a media facing surface (MFS), a trailing shield at the MFS, and a MAMR stack disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield at the MFS. The MAMR stack includes a seed layer and at least one magnetic layer. The seed layer is fabricated from a thermally conductive material having electrical resistivity lower than that of the main pole. The seed layer has a stripe height greater than a stripe height of the at least one magnetic layer. With the extended seed layer, the bias current from the trailing shield to the main pole spreads further away from the MFS along the extended seed layer before flowing into the main pole, reducing temperature rise at or near the MAMR stack, leading to improved write head reliability.

A magnetic recording head having an air bearing surface (ABS) includes a main pole, a side shield laterally spaced from the main pole by a first side gap and a second side gap, an electrically conductive non-magnetic gap material layer disposed between the main pole and the side shield in the first side gap, and a dielectric non-magnetic gap material matrix and a conformal dielectric spacer layer disposed between the main pole and the side shield in the second side gap. The dual side gap recording head can improve on track performance on write gap peak field, on track performance on write field gradient, ATI off track performance, WATER reliability and can provide advantageous writer and side shield saturation properties.

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS), a pole having leading and trailing surfaces, a trailing shield having a pole-facing surface, a write gap and coil(s). The pole's trailing surface has a portion adjoining the MFS and oriented at a nonzero, acute bevel angle from a direction perpendicular to the MFS. The pole-facing surface includes a first portion adjoining the MFS and oriented at a first angle substantially the same as the bevel angle, a second portion oriented at a second angle greater than the first trailing shield angle, and a third portion oriented at a third angle substantially the same as the first angle. The write gap has first, second and third thicknesses adjacent to the first, second and third portions of the pole-facing surface, respectively. The first thickness is constant. The second thickness varies. The third thickness is constant and greater than the first thickness.

Magnetic recording write apparatus having a stepped conformal trailing shield

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS) and includes an auxiliary pole, coil(s) and a main pole having a pole tip and a yoke. The pole tip occupies part of the MFS. The yoke has a yoke length measured from the MFS in a yoke direction perpendicular to the MFS. The yoke length is less than four microns. The main pole has a total length in the yoke direction and a width in a cross-track direction. The main pole is continuous along the total length. The aspect ratio of the main pole is the total length divided by the width and exceeds one. The main pole includes surface(s) having a nonzero acute flare angle from the MFS. The auxiliary pole is adjacent to the main pole and recessed from the MFS by not more than 1.05 micron. The coil(s) energizes the main pole and have not more than two turns.

Magnetic recording write apparatus having a pole having an aspect ratio greater than one and an auxiliary pole

A perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) writer is configured to magnetically record data on a rotatable disk surface. The PMR writer including a pole tip, side shields, an air-bearing surface (ABS) region, a yoke region comprising Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), side gaps and a plurality of throat regions. The side gaps are arranged respectively between the pole tip and the side shields and include SiO2. A side gap width of the plurality of throat regions increases with a side shield throat height above the ABS region for each of the throat regions. The side gap width has a different width variation in each of the throat regions.

A magnetic apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS), a pole, a top shield, a back gap and coil(s). The pole includes a yoke extension, a yoke between the yoke extension and the MFS, and a pole tip between the yoke and the MFS. The write gap is between the top shield and the pole tip. The back gap is recessed from the ABS and magnetically and physically connects the top shield to the yoke. The coil(s) energize the pole and have multiple turns. Part of a first turn is between the yoke and the top shield. Part of a second turn is recessed from the MFS and aligned with part of the yoke extension. Part of the first turn is between the part of the second turn and the MFS. The back gap is between part of the first turn and part of the second turn.

One such apparatus is a magnetic read transducer including a first read sensor, a second read sensor, and a shield assembly positioned between the first read sensor and the second read sensor at an air bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic read transducer, the shield assembly including a first shield layer assembly having a first footprint with a first area, and a second shield layer assembly having a second footprint with a second area, where the second area is greater than the first area.

Apparatuses and methods for providing thin shields in a multiple sensor array

A magnetic writer includes a high magnetic moment write pole layer on a main write pole, the write pole layer including a proximal end recessed from the air bearing surface, and a Wide Area Track Erasure (WATER) reservoir recessed from the proximal end of the write pole layer and transverse to a longitudinal direction of the main write pole. The write pole layer may be conformal in shape to, but have smaller dimensions relative to, the main write pole, such that a distance between their outer surfaces is generally constant in a flare region. The WATER reservoir width, in a cross-track direction, may be greater than or equal to the maximum width of the main write pole.

Perpendicular magnetic recording writer having improved performance and wide area track erasure reliability

A method provides a magnetic transducer having a media-facing surface (MFS). The method includes providing a pole, providing a side gap, providing coil(s) for energizing the pole and providing side shield(s). A portion of the pole resides at the MFS. The side gap is between the pole and the side shield(s). The side shield(s) have a gradient in a saturation magnetization such that the saturation magnetization increases in a yoke direction perpendicular to the MFS. The step of providing the side shield(s) further includes providing a nonmagnetic structure having a side surface parallel to the MFS and providing at least one side shield layer. A portion of the side shield layer(s) are on the side surface. The portion of the side shield layer(s) has the gradient in the saturation magnetization. At least part of the side shield being formed by the portion of the side shield layer(s).
