A planar antenna for microwave applications includes a supporting structure that is made using standard LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramics) multi-layer techniques and a polyimide tape containing an adhesive at one side which is adheringly attached to the supporting structure. The body of the supporting structure defines a transmission line substrate and several of the intermediate layers define a path for microwave energy to be coupled from the transmission line substrate to the antenna. The method includes adhering the tape to the supporting structure, cutting the tape to size, and baking the tape and supporting structure in an oven at about 180.degree. C. for about 4 hours to rigidify the tape. The obtained antenna is thus protected against substrate effects such as TM mode zero cut-off frequencies.

Low-loss aperture-coupled planar antenna for microwave applications

A planar dual band antenna comprising three superimposed dielectric layers, ground plane on one external surface, a conductive patch on the other and parallel conductive strips at the interface of dielectric layers that is closer to the patch. The dielectric constant of the middle layer is different from that of the two other layers.

Planar lower cost multilayer dual-band microstrip antenna

A slab dielectric waveguide for the millimeter and sub-millimeter wave regions is achieved by providing a thin grounded dielectric slab of rectangular cross-section into which a sequence of equally spaced cylindrical lenses are fabricated. The axis of these lenses coincides with the center line of the slab guide, i.e. the propagation direction of the guide. The spacing of the lenses S is assumed to be on the order of many guide wavelengths .lambda.; the width of the slabguide w is on the order of at least several .lambda.; and the thickness d of the guide typically is sufficiently small so that only the fundamental surface wave mode can exist on the slab. If the permittivity of the lenses exceeds that of the guide, the lenses will have a convex shape and in the opposite case, the lenses will have a concave shape. As those skilled in the art will appreciate, the concave shape will simplify the fabrication of guide and will reduce its diffraction losses.

Hybrid dielectric slab beam waveguide

A circular symmetrical dielectric antenna structure and feed arrangement provide an omni-directional radiation pattern. The antenna includes a linear dielectric feed section, an integral radiating section having a taper which decreases outwardly, and an excitation means coupling millimeter wave energy to the feed section. The entire structure is circularly symmetrical about a central longitudinal axis. A first embodiment is in the form of a longitudinal dielectric rod having a uniform diameter at the feed and with circular periodically spaced corrugations at the radiating end. A tapered intermediate section has grooves of increasing depth, with the depth being constant at the remainder of the radiating end. A circular waveguide couples energy to a tapered dielectric transition section to provide excitation to the uniform feed end. A second embodiment is in the form of a flat circular disk having tapered radiating ends. A central metal cap limits radiation from the top surface. Excitation is provided by a circular metal waveguide coupled to a tapered dielectric transition section, a coaxial cable connected along the central axis, or a rectangular to circular metal waveguide coupling.

Dielectric omni-directional antennas

A millimeter wave dual beam line scanning antenna integral with a tunable solid state oscillator is disclosed. The antenna provides two fan-shaped beams from opposite faces and when the antenna is rotated, a roughly conical shaped scan obtains. Furthermore, variation of the oscillator frequency causes a variation in radiation angle and provides two line scanning beams from opposite faces.

Integrated dual beam line scanning antenna and negative resistance diode

A vertically polarized array comprised of both bottom fed and top fed conurations having a driven element comprising at least one but, when desirable, two generally horizontal wire conductor segments of a length substantially equal to one half the operating wavelength of the array and with the ends of the half-wave conductor segments being connected to or extending into generally vertical quarter wavelength wire conductor segments. In a bottom fed configuration the feedpoint is at the bottom end of one vertical quarter wavelength conductor segment while in a top fed configuration one vertical quarter wavelength segment comprises a quarter wavelength of coaxial transmission line having one end configured into signal isolation means, comprising a cable choke, while the feedpoint is located at the other end. Behind the array, located at a distance of substantially a quarter wavelength, is a parasitic reflector element comprising a substantially identical structure as the driven element with the lower ends of the vertical quarter wavelength elements thereof positioned a foot or two above the surface of the ground. Such an arrangement provides unidirectional radiation and reception at low take-off angles, e.g. 20.degree. above the horizon.

Tactical high frequency array antennas

Spherical antenna arrangements are disclosed utilizing annular slots in polar regions which are associated with resonant cavities having a TE.sub.01 mode or a TE.sub.11 mode of field distribution. This field distribution within the cavity produces a cosine field distribution around the annular slot which serves via proper cavity excitation to produce nearly hemispherical isotropic radiation characteristics. The resonant cavities may take on the form of a parallel-plate structure or a coaxial cylindrical structure. Circular polarization and hemispherical coverage with uniform gain is characteristic of the antenna when the cavities contain probes placed ninety degrees apart in azimuth at the same radius from center and coupled to the quadrature phase related ports of a signal coupler.

Spherical antennas having isotropic radiation patterns

A phase front homing system airborne antenna array which employs portions the airframe as two antenna elements and wherein each antenna element includes a coaxial sleeve coupler.
