A method for managing data storage system management applications includes executing, by a client device, a first data storage system management application, receiving, by the client device, an execution instruction for execution of a second data storage system management application, and detecting, by the client device, an installation of a second data storage system management application as part of the client device, the second data storage system management application being distinct from the first data storage system management application. If the second data storage system management application is installed on the client device, executing the second data storage system management application, otherwise retrieving the second data storage system management application from a server device and executing the second data storage system management application.

Control of data storage system management application activation

Described are techniques for executing an application on two or more processors. A first portion of one or more modules of the application is determined. A second portion of one or more modules of the application is determined. The first portion of modules is executed on each of the two or more processor. A first of said two or more processor is selected as an active processor. The second portion of modules is executed on the active processor and not on the other ones of said two or more processors.

Master-slave provider architecture and failover mechanism

Described are techniques for controlling performance of a data storage system. As a first part of an interactive dialogue, a policy is selected including one or more I/O classes each representing a logical grouping of I/O requests received at the data storage system. As a second part of the interactive dialogue, performance of said data storage system is monitored for each I/O class included in said policy without enforcing said policy. As a third part of the interactive dialogue, at least one performance goal associated with one of said I/O classes is set. The policy is run as a fourth part of the interactive dialogue causing enforcement of the policy on the data storage system in accordance with the at least one performance goal.
