In a melting crucible (3) a central bottom portion (27) is formed of a plurality of palisades (5) and is shaped so that the palisades together form a vessel or a pot (7) having a centrally disposed spout or outlet (8). Two independently powered induction coils (10, 11) are provided, one coil (10) externally surrounding the collar or upper part of the central bottom portion (27), and the other coil (11) externally surrounding the spout (8). The palisades (5) are separated from one another by individual gaps (6) running radially outwardly from the center, while the electromagnetic field of at least the upper coil (10) acts on the charge contained in the melting crucible through the gaps (6).

The feed line (7) and the return line (8) are combined to a single current supply line (6) at one end of the coil which leads to the first turn sections connected to the opposite end of the coil. Second turn sections running back to the supply line (6) are radially opposed from respective first turn sections.

A closed remelting furnace 1 includes a vertical furnace axis A-A, an electrode supporting rod 15 for a consumable electrode 23, a furnace body 29 which has a driving mechanism for the electrode supporting rod and several furnace lower portions 6, 7 each of which has an ingot mold 9 including an ingot mold axis K-K. A furnace upper portion 11 and the furnace lower portions can individually, if desired, be aligned by means of a lateral relative movement. Through a sealed passage the electrode supporting rod is passed through a top limiting wall 16 of the furnace upper portion 11. In order to reduce the total height and labor and cost involved in design and construction the furnace upper portion 11 is subdivided in two partial segments 13, 19 along a horizontal separating groove. The upper partial segment 13 is configured so as to be short as compared to the total height of the furnace upper portion and constantly associated with the electrode supporting rod 15 and the lower partial segment 19 can be moved out of the area of the furnace axis A-A by means of transporting device.

Apparatus for the detection and evaluation of process parameters arising during the remelting of an electrode (31) to a metallic block (32) in a vacuum arc furnace detects deviations of at least one process parameter from a predetermined course and uses them to locate faults in the electrode and/or in the metal block (32).

Fault detection during remelt of electrodes into blocks

Process for melting down and degassing lumpy material by means of inductive heating and under subatmospheric pressure in a melting crucible. For the purpose of shortening the duration of the process, scavenging gas and/or reaction gas is introduced into the bottom region of the melting crucible during at least 50% of the duration of the process until the material is melted down completely.

Method for the electroslag refining of metals of which at least 50 weight-percent are in the form of at least one current-carrying consumable electrode, especially one having alloy components with an affinity for oxygen, wherein the metals are remelted to an ingot through a molten bath of slag. To achieve the object of preventing oxidation, freckling, rings and white spots and at the same time produce a degassing, the following measures are undertaken: (a) the refining process is performed at a subatmospheric pressure, (b) the slag is an at least 80 weight-percent oxidic slag of oxides whose boiling points are above 2000.degree. C., and (c) the slag is heated by means of alternating current.
