Methods and devices relating to a radiation detector comprising of a gas chamber having a cathode plate and a substrate separated by a gap. An array of nano-tips deposited on the substrate that forms an anode structure for electron charge collection. An external power source in communication with the cathode plate and the substrate, wherein the external power source is capable of generating a plurality of regions and each region includes an electric field near each nano-tip of the array of the nano-tips that results in initiating a radiation induced controlled discharge of electrons and ions from at least one gas or at least one gas mixture. Finally, the plurality of regions include multiple generated electric fields near tips of the array of nano-tips such as CNTs, that communicatively create a conductive path between the cathode plate and the substrate, the radiation detector is capable of determining at least one radiation property.

Nano-tips based gas ionization chamber for neutron detection

A more precise determination of bulk formation density is attainable using a pulsed &#x3b3;-&#x3b3; density tool and simultaneously compensating for interactions due to photoelectric effect and density variations caused by standoff. A source directs energetic particles at a formation having a known photoelectric factor and electron density. One or more photons either emitted or deflected from the formation are captured at a first or second detector, respectively spaced at first and second distances from the source, and separated from each other by a third distance. First and second total energies of the photons respectively striking the first and second detectors are measured during a time interval. A first filter is disposed between the first detector and formation effective to cause Pe response to match standoff influence, thereby compensating for both effects simultaneously. In some embodiments, a second filter is provided between the second detector and formation.

Method of extracting formation density and Pe using a pulsed accelerator based litho-density tool

An electron acceleration portion of a Betatron having a vacuum chamber with an interior wall spaced from an exterior wall with a main electron orbit located approximate to the exterior wall and the interior wall. An electron injector has an anode structured and arranged adjacent a wall selected from the group consisting of the interior wall and the exterior wall that is shaped so as to not impede the main electron orbit. There is at least one electron deflection plate disposed approximate an anode end of the anode and the main electron orbit. There can be two electron deflection plates spaced apart that form a gap of a width effective to receive emitted electrons from the electron injector. Such that, there is a voltage potential between the two electron deflection plates that is effective to deflect emitted electrons towards the main electron orbit.

Injector for betatron

A betatron magnet having at least one electron injector positioned approximate an inside of a radius of a betatron orbit, the betatron magnet further includes a first guide magnet having a first pole face and a second guide magnet having a second pole face. Both the first and the second guide magnet have a centrally disposed aperture and the first pole face is separated from the second pole face by a guide magnet gap. A core is disposed within the centrally disposed apertures in an abutting relationship with both guide magnets. The core has at least one core gap. A drive coil is wound around both guide magnet pole faces. An orbit control coil has a core portion wound around the core gap and a field portion wound around the guide magnet pole faces. The core portion and the field portion are connected but in opposite polarity.

Internal injection betatron

A betatron structure having a donut-shaped vacuum chamber, wherein the vacuum chamber is made up of two or more pieces bonded together; an injector positioned within the vacuum chamber; and two or more magnets positioned to the outside of the vacuum chamber. A method of manufacturing a betatron structure, including: (a) fabricating two or more pieces; (b) positioning an injector on one of the two or more pieces; and (c) bonding the two or more pieces such that when bonded, the substrates form a hollow donut-shaped chamber.

Methods of constructing a betatron vacuum chamber and injector

A betatron includes a betatron magnet with a first guide magnet having a first pole face and a second guide magnet having a second pole face. Both the first and the second guide magnet have a centrally disposed aperture and the first pole face is separated from the second pole face by a guide magnet gap. A core is disposed within the centrally disposed apertures in an abutting relationship with both guide magnets. The core has at least one core gap. A drive coil is wound around both guide magnet pole faces. An orbit control coil has a contraction coil portion wound around the core gap and a bias control portion wound around the guide magnet pole faces. The contraction coil portion and the bias control portion are connected but in opposite polarity. Magnet fluxes in the core and guide magnets return through peripheral portions of the betatron magnet.

Single drive betatron

A wireline-conveyed side-wall core coring tool for acquiring side-wall core from a geological formation for performing in-situ side-wall core analysis. The coring tool has a core analysis unit operable to measure geophysical properties of an acquired side-wall core. The measured geophysical properties may be used to determine the success of the acquisition of side-wall cores by the coring tool. The core analysis unit is operable of performing an in-situ interpretation of measured geophysical property of the side-wall core and transmitting in near real-time the measurements or the interpretation results to surface data acquisition and processing apparatus.

Method and apparatus for in-situ side-wall core sample analysis

An oil sample is subjected to nuclear electromagnetic irradiation downhole, and the electron and/or mass density of the oil sample is determined by measuring the attenuation of the irradiation and relating the attenuation to the electron density. If the irradiation is high energy gamma ray irradiation, the attenuation is considered to be a function of Compton scattering only, which in turn is related to the electron density of the sample. If X-rays are utilized, attenuation is preferably measured in two energy windows. Using the two different attenuation values found in the different windows, the attenuation due to Compton scattering can be found and related to the electron and/or mass density of the sample. In addition, attenuation due to photoelectric absorption may also be determined and related to the presence of one or more heavy elements in the oil (e.g., sulfur) and/or sanding.

Apparatus and methods for downhole determination of characteristics of formation fluids

Apparatus and methods for measuring oil flow velocity in a well are provided which utilize fluorescence quenching. A marker which quenches the natural fluorescence of crude oil is chosen and injected into the oil flow at a first location. At a second location, the oil flow is subjected to light at a wavelength which will cause oil to naturally fluoresce. The fluorescence signal is detected at the second location by a sensing probe. The time that it takes for the quenching marker to move from the first location to the second location is measured by sensing a decrease in fluorescence due to the quencher. Fluid velocity is determined by dividing the distance between the marker-ejection point and the optical probe position by the time it took the marker to move that distance.

Apparatus and methods for determining velocity of oil in a flow stream

A downhole optical apparatus includes an LED source, reflectance and fluorescence detectors, a plurality of fibers, a dichroic mirror (DM), a beam splitter/coupler, a probe, a short-pass filter (SP), a dichroic long-pass filter (LP), and a lens. Source light filtered by the SP is fed to the DM which deflects light of desired wavelengths only. The deflected light is focused by the lens onto a fiber and is ultimately injected into an oil flow by the probe. Light reflected by oil or fluorescing therefrom is received by the probe, and split by the splitter. A small portion is received by the reflectance detector. A large portion is received by the lens and directed to the DM which deflects reflected light and passes light at longer fluorescing wavelengths. Passed light is further filtered by the DM and LP to eliminate remnants of the reflected light, and provided to the fluorescence detector.

A betatron, adapted, e.g., for use as a high-energy electromagnetic radiation source in a borehole well logging tool, includes modulator circuitry for actively controlling the electron beam radius during acceleration and for extracting the electron beam at or near maximum magnetic field strength. Such control may be effected by suitable separate pulsing of field-coil and core-coil magnets, and results in enhanced efficiency of betatron magnet-excitation power conversion and beam end-point energy stability and intensity over a range of operating temperatures.

Neutron generator

A compact circular magnetic induction accelerator (betatron) for use as a borehole gamma ray source includes a field magnet and generally circular pole pieces composed of a class of ferrite having the general formula M.sup.2+ Fe.sub.2.sup.3+ O.sub.4, where M represents two or more divalent metal ions from the group consisting of Mn, Zn and Ni. The core magnet is in the form of two symmetrical closed loops, with one leg of each loop passing axially through the circular pole pieces. The field coil and the core coil may be arranged in series or in parallel, and switching circuits are provided for effecting electron beam capture and ejection. In an illustrative borehole application, the betatron is used as a gamma ray source in a bulk density logging tool.
