A composite wood panel having a first and a second longitudinal edge comprising an essentially parallel first surface and second surface, a core, a spacer integrally formed in or attached in the core on at least the longitudinal edges wherein the spacer extends from an edge a pre-determined distance whereby upon placing one panel adjacent to a second panel a spacer of the first panel will abut a spacer of or an edge of a second panel thereby forming at least a first aperture between the adjacent panels wherein an aperture is located between adjacent edges of the panels. A spacer can push into its panel upon linear expansion of a panel. The spacer can be, e.g., a tongue, edge profile, or separate spacing material. Methods for making and using panels are disclosed.

Self-spacing wood composite panels

A method for the production of a wood composite board is provided that comprises the steps of: providing a quantity of wood in the form of strands; coating the wood strands with a binder composition to from coated strands; forming a mat from the coated strands; exposing said mat to steam; ventilating steam; and pressing the mat, at a high temperature, to form the wood composite board having a final thickness.

Strength-enhanced, lightweight lignocellulosic composite board materials and methods of their manufacture

The invention relates to a fire retardant oriented strand board composite material comprising a mixture of wood strands, at least one organophosphorus ester, at least one polymeric binder resin, and a wax. In a process embodiment of the present invention this mixture is consolidated under heat and pressure to form an oriented strand board composite panel, whereby during consolidation the organophosphorus ester chemically interacts with the polymeric binder to provide cross-linking between the binder and the organophosphorus ester.

Fire retardant wood composite materials

A fire retardant ligno-cellulosic panel made from a mixture of (i) ligno-cellulosic material, (ii) at least one polymeric binder resin, and (iii) fire retardant solid particles containing fire retardant inorganic materials and a synthetic polymeric material, wherein the mixture is consolidated under heat and pressure to form the panel. Preferably, the fire retardant solid particles are a fine particle size sanding dust produced during the manufacture and finishing of synthetic particle filled resin materials.

Fire retardant ligno-cellulosic composite materials and a method for making the same

A fire retardant coating composition which comprises expandable graphite particles, a solid absorbent material, a polymeric binder, a carbonific material, a blowing agent, a solvent and a rheology modifier. The expandable graphite particles include from about 20 to about 95% by weight of the combined amount of expandable graphite particles and solid absorbent material. The polymeric binder comprises from about 10 to about 50% by weight of the combined amount of the polymeric binder, the expandable graphite particles, and the solid absorbent material. The carbonific material comprises from about 0 to about 70% by weight of the combined amount of the carbonific material and the polymeric binder. Similarly, the blowing agent comprises from about 0 to about 70% by weight of the combined amount of the blowing agent and the polymeric material. The solvent comprises from about 25 to about 50% by weight of the total composition. The rheology modifier is present in an amount of from 0.001 to about 7% by weight of the total composition.
