The user experience of application downloading and usage between multiple devices in a network is enhanced. One instance of an app on a first device is able to identify and verify installation and/or execution of a companion app on a second device where the two devices may have entirely different platforms (e.g., smartphone operating system and TV platform). The experience for users who have devices on the same network converge in order to improve the user experience with respect to a particular app. In this manner, an enhanced and efficient means of providing an n-screen experience with the app is enabled; ways that provide synergy between devices on the same network.

Downloading and launching an app on a second device from a first device

A remote camera device is enabled to be used as a source of a video stream in a video call where the local endpoint host in the call, such as a TV, functions as a local endpoint proxy. The TV receives the video stream and transmits it to a remote endpoint host (the other end of the video call) using a conventional video call application. A TV without a camera is able to function as a local endpoint proxy in a video call with a remote device. In another scenario, the TV discovers and connects to a remote camera device. The remote camera, such as a cell phone, streams video to the TV which functions as a local endpoint proxy in the video call. The TV transmits the video to the device at the other end of the call.

A portable license for licensed content is obtained by a user along with a regular license in a local network, such as a home network or other private network. The portable license may be stored in a license server on a portable device, such as a smart phone or a tablet, which functions as a portable license server. The user may take the portable device to another location where it joins another local network. A device in the second network, which does not have a license to play the licensed content, may use the portable license on the portable device to execute the content, enabling the user to enjoy it in multiple environments. The device (e.g., a TV) in the second network may continue to play the content as long as the portable license or another valid license is present in the network.

One implementation involves receiving a channel selection from a user, tuning to the selected scrambled channel, checking a cache for Conditional Access (CA) descrambling information associated with the selected channel, and in case of a cache hit, then retrieving the descrambling information associated with the selected channel from the cache for descrambling the scrambled channel.

A system and method for determining which program to display from multiple content sources at a power-on event of a content display device at a certain location is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving metadata containing content information about multiple programming available from multiple content sources on an integrated network. The content information can be analyzed so as to determine if any of the programming satisfies rules pertaining to programming appropriate for the location of the display device within a home. The content information can be analyzed in advance such that when a power-on command is received at the content display device, a program that has been determined to satisfy the rules is displayed on the display device.

System and method for filtering a data packet using a combined filter are disclosed. In one aspect, the method includes receiving a data packet and N filters. The method includes receiving a data packet and N (wherein N is an integer and N&#x3e;1) filters, each filter comprising a bit mask and corresponding bit values. The method further includes, for each of the N filters, identifying a key element from a portion of the filter corresponding to a combined filter, the key element being a segment of the filter portion having the richest bit pattern. The method further includes generating the combined filter by combining the key element of the N filters. The method further includes filtering the data packet with the combined filter to determine whether there is a match between the data packet and each key element.

A method and system for filtering data packets, is provided. One implementation involves filtering data packets using a set of filters, each filter having a bit mask and corresponding bit values, by categorizing the filters into different groups based on their bit mask value differences, and generating a new mask of bits having corresponding bit values, applying the new mask to the incoming packet to select a filter category for the incoming packet, and filtering the incoming packet by applying the group of filters for the selected category to the incoming packet.
