Embodiments provide beamforming apparatuses, methods and a computer programs for a base station transceiver and a mobile transceiver. An apparatus () operable in a base station transceiver () of a mobile communication system comprises a transceiver module () comprising interfaces to a plurality () of antennas. The transceiver module () is operable to subdivide the plurality () of antennas in a plurality of subgroups using the interfaces, and to form a first beam pattern () using one or more antennas of a subgroup. The apparatus () further comprises a control module (), which is operable to transmit a synchronization signal using the transceiver module () and the first beam pattern (). The control module () is further operable to receive a response signal after transmission of the synchronization signal from a mobile transceiver () using the transceiver module (), to determine a second beam pattern () based on the response signal from the mobile transceiver (). The second beam pattern () has a higher antenna gain than the first beam pattern (), and to transmit a signal to the mobile transceiver () using the second beam pattern () and the transceiver module (). An apparatus () operable in a mobile transceiver () of a mobile communication system comprises a transceiver module () comprising interfaces to a plurality of antennas (), and a control module () operable to determine a first set of beam patterns () based on the plurality of antennas (), to receive a signal from a base station transceiver () using a first beam pattern from the first set of beam patterns () using the transceiver module (). The control module () is further operable to determine a second set of beam patterns () based on the plurality of antennas (), the second set of beam patterns () comprising more beam patterns than the first set of beam patterns (), and to transmit a signal to the base station transceiver () using a second beam pattern from the set of second beam patterns () and using the transceiver module ().

Beamforming apparatuses, methods and computer programs for a base station transceiver and a mobile transceiver

An apparatus and method for feeding back channel state information are disclosed. The method of providing channel state information for a wireless communications channel provided between a first network node having at least one transmission antenna and a second network node having at least one reception antenna comprises the steps of: estimating a current value of at least a first type of channel state information for at least one sub-channel within the channel from signals received by the at least one reception antenna over the channel from the at least one transmission antenna; determining whether the current value of the first type of channel state information varies from previously-transmitted value for the first type of channel state information by at least a predetermined amount; and if so, transmitting an indicator indicative of the current value for the first type of channel state information to the first network node.

The present invention provides methods implemented in a base station having a plurality of antennas and one or more user terminals. One embodiment of the method includes receiving feedback from at least one user in response to transmitting a first frame to said at least one user. The first frame is formed by pre-coding at least one symbol using at least one first code word selected from at least one first code book associated with the at least one user. The method also includes transmitting at least one second frame to the user(s). The second frame(s) are pre-coded using at least one second codeword selected from at least one second codebook. The second codebook(s) determined based on the feedback and the first codeword(s).

An apparatus and method for feeding back channel state information is disclosed. The method is for providing channel state information for a wireless communications channel provided between a first network node having at least one transmission antenna and a second network node having at least one reception antenna. The method comprises the steps of: determining characteristics of each tap resolvable in the time domain of at least one sub-channel within said channel from signals received by said at least one reception antenna over said channel from said at least one transmission antenna; arranging said characteristics into at least one vector; quantizing said at least one vector by selecting one of a plurality of codebook vectors at a first level of a hierarchical codebook of vectors; and providing, to said first network node, an indication of an index to said one of a plurality of codebook vectors.

A method is provided, in a wireless communications network comprising a source node, a destination node and at least one relay node, of selecting spatial subchannels for use. The method comprising the steps of: spatially decomposing channels into spatial subchannels; and selecting a subset of the subchannels for use that at least approximately maximises predicted throughput rate.

The present invention provides a method for implementation in a first functional entity in a wireless communication system that includes a first plurality of base stations for providing wireless connectivity to at least one mobile unit. In one embodiment of the method includes receiving, at the first functional entity, channel state information associated with a plurality of wireless communication channels between the first plurality of base stations and the mobile unit. Selection of a second plurality of base stations from the first plurality of base stations is performed jointly with resource allocation to the second plurality of base stations using the channel state information. The first functional entity then communicates information indicative of the selected second plurality of base stations and the allocated resources to the selected second plurality of base stations.
