This invention provides a method, system and apparatus for controlling mobility on a wireless network, which includes retrieving a network mobility preference, the network mobility preference indicating a level of mobility service for the mobile station, the level of mobility service indicating the extent to which the mobile station can handoff among base stations of the wireless network, and establishing a level of mobility service for the mobile station based on the retrieved network mobility preference. The method and apparatus may further include determining the level of mobility service for the mobile station to be fully or partially restricted based on the mobility preference.

To interwork between a first authentication domain and a second authentication domain, a bridge module performs a first authentication procedure in the first authentication domain for a mobile station, wherein the first authentication domain is part of a wireless access network. System and method for seamless roaming over scalable wide area Wireless LAN networks (WAWLAN) with clientless mobile subscribers. A preferred embodiment comprises a wireless gateway (WG) coupled to one or more access points in a wireless network to form a wireless cluster (WC), a network access gateway (NAG) coupled to a wired network, and a switch coupled to the WG and the NAG. Each wireless cluster is a Wireless LAN Network (WLAN) with homogenous or heterogeneous network architecture. The WG detects mobile nodes in a wireless cluster and tracks mobile node location in the wireless cluster. The NAG is an anchor point for mobile nodes in the WAWLAN and maintains a fixed source of information about each mobile node regardless of their mobility. The switch provides connectivity between the NAG and the WG. Seamless roaming across Wireless LAN network boundary by mobile subscribers without requiring special mobility enabling client software.

Clientless mobile subscribers with seamless roaming over scalable wide area wireless networks

Location update messages for a mobile node can be made interceptible by routers which form tunnels for communication with the mobile node. A correspondent agent intercepts a Binding Update with a Router Alert and binds the address of the mobile node with a care of address for the mobile node provided in the Binding Update. The correspondent agent will thereafter intercept messages from its correspondent host destined for the mobile node and redirect them to the care of address thereby bypassing the home agent of the mobile node. A border router intercepts a Registration Request with Router Alert and binds the address of the mobile node with a care of address for the mobile node. If a binding existed previously, then the border router terminates the Request. Otherwise, the Request is forwarded to the home agent of the mobile node after substituting its own address for the care of address.
