A continuous wave (CW) electron accelerator for the treatment of industrial streams including an electron beam source, a modified high efficiency slot coupled cavity, at least one focusing magnet positioned surrounding the accelerator to contain the beam in the accelerator, an efficient radio frequency power supply means for supplying power of a radio frequency to the cavity to induce a TM01 accelerating mode in the cavity, an electron beam spreader or raster, a fixed magnet array or two-dimensional scanning magnet for deflecting the accelerated beam into a desired shape, and an exit window for extracting the deflected electron beam. The accelerator includes a graded-beta cavity to enable use with a low-power pulsed electron source. The accelerator benefits from a low wall-power loss accelerating cavity that is energized with efficient RF sources, enabling it to be operated in continuous wave mode.

High efficiency normal conducting linac for environmental water remediation

A high-current, compact, conduction cooled superconducting radio-frequency cryomodule for particle accelerators. The cryomodule will accelerate an electron beam of average current up to 1 ampere in continuous wave (CW) mode or at high duty factor. The cryomodule consists of a single-cell superconducting radio-frequency cavity made of high-purity niobium, with an inner coating of NbSn and an outer coating of pure copper. Conduction cooling is achieved by using multiple closed-cycle refrigerators. Power is fed into the cavity by two coaxial couplers. Damping of the high-order modes is achieved by a warm beam-pipe ferrite damper.

High-current conduction cooled superconducting radio-frequency cryomodule

A method for recovering energy from spent energy recovered linac (ERL) beams. The method includes adding a plurality of passive decelerating cavities at the beam dump of the ERL, adding one or more coupling waveguides between the passive decelerating cavities, setting an adequate external Q (Qext) to adjust to the beam loading situation, and extracting the RF energy through the coupling waveguides.

Method for energy recovery of spent ERL beams

A method for providing a superconducting surface on a laser-driven niobium cathode in order to increase the effective quantum efficiency. The enhanced surface increases the effective quantum efficiency by improving the laser absorption of the surface and enhancing the local electric field. The surface preparation method makes feasible the construction of superconducting radio frequency injectors with niobium as the photocathode. An array of nano-structures are provided on a flat surface of niobium. The nano-structures are dimensionally tailored to interact with a laser of specific wavelength to thereby increase the electron yield of the surface.

Nano-patterned superconducting surface for high quantum efficiency cathode

A method for maximizing the brightness of the bunches in a particle injector by converting a highly space-charged beam to a relativistic and emittance-dominated beam. The method includes 1) determining the bunch charge and the initial kinetic energy of the highly space-charge dominated input beam; 2) applying the bunch charge and initial kinetic energy properties of the highly space-charge dominated input beam to determine the number of accelerator cavities required to accelerate the bunches to relativistic speed; 3) providing the required number of accelerator cavities; and 4) setting the gradient of the radio frequency (RF) cavities; and 5) operating the phase of the accelerator cavities between &#x2212;90 and zero degrees of the sinusoid of phase to simultaneously accelerate and bunch the charged particles to maximize brightness, and until the beam is relativistic and emittance-dominated.
