Polymer with internal crosslinking and breaking mechanisms

A continuous process forms liquid or semi-solid suspensions of water-hydratable guar particles in a non-aqueous solvent directly from hydrated guar splits. In particular, guar splits are hydrated, compressed to form wet guar flakes, and then dried. The dried guar flakes are then combined with a non-aqueous carrier fluid. Finally, the guar and carrier fluid mixture is homogenized, and, if desired, the homogenized guar and carrier fluid mixture may be shear milled to further size-reduce the average particle size of the guar particle.

Granules composed of a particulate breaker chemical dispersed in a wax matrix are used in fracturing operations to break hydrocarbon liquids gelled with salts of alkyl phosphate esters. The wax granules are solid at surface temperature and melt or disperse in the hydrocarbon liquid at formation temperature releasing the breaker chemical to react with gelling agent.

The granules exhibit delayed release of the breaker to permit placement of the gelled fluid into the subterranean formation. The method of the present invention is used in gravel packing operation to degrade polymeric gelling agents used in the gravel packing liquid.
