Method for image acquisition in an ultrasonic biometric imaging device, the method comprising: determining a target area of a touch surface; by a plurality of ultrasonic transducers arranged at a periphery of the touch surface, emitting a shaped ultrasonic beam towards the target area using transmit beamforming; by the ultrasonic transducers, receiving reflected ultrasonic echo signals defined by received RF-data, the reflected ultrasonic echo signals resulting from interactions with an object in contact with the touch surface at the target area; subtracting background RF-data from the received RF-data to form a clean image; performing receive side beamforming to form a reconstructed image from the clean image; and for a plurality of reconstructed images resulting from a plurality of emitted ultrasonic beams for a given target area, adding the plurality of reconstructed images to form a summed image.

A method for controlling a plurality of ultrasonic transducers in a fingerprint sensing system that comprises a cover plate having a sensing surface configured to be touched by a finger, and a plurality of ultrasonic transducers located at the periphery of the cover plate and configured to transmit an acoustic signal propagating in the cover plate, receive an ultrasonic signal having interacted with an object in contact with the sensing surface, and to determine properties of the object based on the received ultrasonic signal. The method comprises: in response to a first input, controlling the plurality of transducers such that at least a portion of the sensing surface has a first feature detection resolution; and in response to a second input, controlling the plurality of transducers such that at least a portion of the sensing surface has a second feature detection resolution, different from the first feature detection resolution.

There is an optical biometric imaging device configured to capture an image of an object in contact with an outer surface of the biometric imaging device, the biometric imaging device comprising: an image sensor comprising a photodetector pixel array and image sensor circuitry configured to capture an image of the object in contact with the outer surface of the imaging device; the image sensor comprising a first electrically conductive structure arranged adjacent to an active sensing area of the photodetector pixel array; a display panel arranged on top of and at a distance from the image sensor, the display panel comprising a second electrically conductive structure on a bottom side of the display panel and arranged to face the first electrically conductive structure of the image sensor; and capacitive readout circuitry arranged and configured to detect a capacitance between the first electrically conductive structure and the second electrically conductive structure.

One of the sub-layers in the display panel comprises a protruding portion extending outside of an area of any other sub-layer located between the sub-layer comprising the protruding portion and the cover plate, and the plurality of ultrasonic transducers are arranged on the protruding portion between the protruding portion and the cover plate.

The sensing device comprises a protective dielectric top layer having an outer surface forming a sensing surface to be touched by the finger; a two-dimensional array of electrically conductive sensing structures arranged underneath the top layer; readout circuitry coupled to each of the electrically conductive sensing structures to receive a sensing signal indicative of a distance between the finger and the sensing structure; and an electroacoustic transducer arranged underneath the top layer and configured to generate an acoustic wave, and to transmit the acoustic wave through the protective dielectric top layer towards the sensing surface to induce an ultrasonic vibration potential in a ridge of finger placed in contact with the sensing surface.
