A vehicle, system, and method of operating a motor of the vehicle. The motor includes a stator and a rotor. A motor controller controls a motor torque of the motor. A sensor measures a motor speed. A rotor temperature sensor measures a temperature of the rotor. A stator temperature sensor measures a temperature of the stator. A processor determines a stator heat loss at the stator based on the motor torque, the motor speed, and the stator temperature, determines a rotor heat loss at the rotor based on the motor torque, the motor speed, and the rotor temperature, and controls flow of a stator coolant stream through the stator at a stator coolant flow rate based on the stator heat loss and a rotor coolant stream through the rotor at a rotor coolant flow rate based on the rotor heat loss.

Physics based coolant flow algorithm for electric motors

An electric propulsion motor system includes a rotary electric propulsion motor that has a stator and a rotor. An air gap is present between the stator and rotor. A fluid circulation system provides pressurized liquid and gas, which is directed through fluid passages in the stator and/or rotor and into the air gap to establish a mixture of pressurized liquid and pressurized gas therein. The pressurized gas dilutes the mixture and pushes the pressurized liquid and pressurized gas against the stator and rotor, forcing it to exit the air gap at the opposite ends of the motor leaving the air gap free of accumulated liquid.

An electrified vehicle may include an electric drive unit having a power inverter and a motor, a closed circulation path containing an electrically conductive working fluid in thermal communication with at least one of the power inverter and the motor, and a magnetohydrodynamic pump containing the working fluid and effective to circulate the working fluid through the closed circulation path.

An electric propulsion motor system includes a cylindrical stator and rotor, a fluid circulation system providing pressurized fluid, and conductors within winding slots. The stator has a yoke and a plurality of teeth extending radially inward from the yoke, with winding slots defined between adjacent teeth. Respective tooth tips extend circumferentially into adjacent winding slots and are radially adjacent to a first conductor within the winding slot, with a first channel through which pressurized fluid flows.

An alternating current motor system includes a motor frame, a rotor including a rotor shaft, a stator including multi-phase AC stator windings, a power inverter producing a multi-phase AC voltage coupled to the multi-phase AC stator windings and at least one ohmic connection between the rotor shaft and the motor frame including a conductive fluid.

Managing bearing currents in an electric machine

A system for controlling a transmission state of a vehicle includes a controller connected to a first drive system and a first transmission including a gear system, a first clutch and a second clutch. The controller is configured to receive a request to change from an initial transmission state to a target transmission state when a propulsion torque is applied to the vehicle. The controller is configured to distribute the propulsion torque such that all of the propulsion torque is applied by a second drive system and the first drive system does not provide any propulsion torque to the vehicle, fully release an off-going clutch from the gear system, control a motor speed based on a rotational speed relation of the target transmission state to reduce a slip speed of the on-going clutch, and fully engage an on-coming clutch to put the first drive system in the target transmission state.

A motor stator includes a stator core having a plurality of stator teeth on an inner diameter thereof and defining a respective plurality of slots between the plurality of stator teeth. A plurality of windings are disposed in the slots. A heat pipe network includes a plurality of evaporator portions including a hollow structure disposed in at least a portion of the plurality of slots and including an interior having a wick extending along the interior of the hollow structure. A condenser portion has an interior portion in communication with the plurality of evaporator portions and is located at an end of the stator core. The wick of each of the plurality of evaporator portions extend into the condenser portion.

A vehicle and a drive system include a method of operating the vehicle. In another exemplary embodiment, a drive system of a vehicle is disclosed. The drive system includes a first sensor, a second sensor and a processor. The first sensor is disposed at a first location of the drive system for measuring a first angle of rotation. The second sensor is disposed at a second location of the drive system for measuring a second angle of rotation. The processor is configured to determine a torque transferred between the first location and the second location based on a difference between the first angle of rotation and the second angle of rotation and control an operation of the drive system based on the torque.

A rotor for an electric machine includes a heat pipe cooling system. A rotor core has a number of cavities internal to the rotor core. The cavities are surrounded by a wall defined by the rotor core. A magnetic element disposed in the at least one cavity leaving a void in the at least one cavity between the magnetic element and the wall. A heat pipe evaporator is disposed in the void and conforms to the available space, contacting the magnetic element and the wall to remove heat from the rotor core.

A stator assembly for an electric machine includes stator teeth connected to a stator yoke to form a stator core. Adjacent teeth define a stator slot. Stator windings are disposed within the slot. A molding material fills the slot around the windings, providing a desired thermoelectrical performance level at different slot regions, including electrical insulation, thermal conductivity, and/or electrostatic shielding levels. A method insulates the stator assembly by inserting a molding tool(s) into the slot to define a void volume, filling the void volume with the dielectric molding material, and curing the dielectric molding material to form a slot liner layer adjacent to the tooth walls. A slot opening between adjacent teeth is filled with an electrically-conductive resin to form an electrostatic shielding layer. An electrical system includes an AC voltage bus connected to a power inverter module and to the electric machine having the above-described stator assembly.

A hybrid powertrain for an automobile includes a transmission adapted to provide power to wheels of the automobile, an engine adapted to provide power to an input shaft of the transmission, and an electric motor-generator unit adapted to provide power to the input shaft of the transmission, wherein the electric motor-generator is positioned within the transmission, coaxial with the transmission input shaft, the electric motor-generator being supported by and enclosed within a pump support of the transmission.

According to several aspects of the present disclosure, a battery module housing cooling assembly is disclosed. The battery module housing cooling assembly can include an endwall including a first polymer plate and a second polymer plate that define a slot therebetween. At least one of the first polymer plate or the second polymer plate define a channel therein that is configured to receive a coolant fluid, and the slot is configured to receive an electrical connector. The battery module housing cooling assembly can also include a cooling plate defining a first connection port and a second connection port, wherein the first connection port and a second connection port are configured to provide the coolant fluid to the channel.

Presented are clutch-type engine disconnect devices, methods for making/using such disconnect devices, and motor vehicles equipped with such disconnect devices. An engine disconnect device includes a notch plate, which has multiple notches and attaches to a torque converter, and a pocket plate, which has multiple pockets and attaches to an engine's crankshaft. A pawl is movably mounted within each notch; these pawls selectively engage the notches with the pockets. A notch plate insert is nested within each notch, supporting thereon one of the pawls. A selector plate interposed between the pocket and notch plates moves from a first position, to shift the pawls out of engagement with the pockets, and a second position, to move the notch plate inserts within the notches and allow the pawls to engage the notches with the pockets to thereby lock the notch plate to the pocket plate to rotate in unison with each other.

A rotor core for an electric machine of an automobile includes a core stack including a plurality of lamination plates, each lamination plate including a plurality of apertures formed therein, the apertures of each of the lamination plates axially aligned to define a plurality of magnet slots extending axially through the core stack, a plurality of magnets stacked axially within each of the plurality of magnet slots along a length of the core stack, at least one of the plurality of magnet slots including a cavity extending axially along the length of the core stack, and a wedge inserted within the cavity adapted to apply a lateral force onto the plurality of magnets within the at least one magnet slot to secure the plurality of magnets within the at least one magnet slot.

A rotary electric machine for use with coolant includes a stator and rotor assembly. The rotor assembly includes a rotor, rotor shaft, and first and second end rings. The rotor has inner and outer diameter surfaces and an embedded set of rotor magnets proximate the outer diameter surface. The shaft is connected to the rotor and defines a main coolant passage along an axis of rotation. Radial shaft coolant passages are in fluid communication with the main coolant passage. The end rings are positioned at opposing distal ends of the rotor. The shaft coolant passages direct the coolant into the rotor and/or the end rings such that the coolant flows axially through rotor cavities of the rotor and cools the rotor magnets via forced convection.
