A system a guidewire and a tensioning mechanism. The guidewire includes a thin elongated structure and an outer shell around a first portion of the thin elongated structure. A second portion of the thin elongated structure is exposed outside the thin elongated structure. The tensioning mechanism is configured to engage the second portion of the thin elongated structure to move the guidewire between a flexible state and a rigid state.

Guidewire

A guidewire including a thin elongated structure and an outer shell around at least a portion of the thin elongated structure. The outer shell includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion and the second portion of the outer shell are each coupled to the thin elongated structure. The first portion is spaced from the second portion by a gap. The guidewire is configured to move between a flexible state and a rigid state. The gap has a first distance when the guidewire is in the flexible state and the gap has a second distance greater than the first distance when the guidewire is in the rigid state.

A device for supporting the outlet end portion of an intravascular catheter within a blood vessel while a treating agent is delivered into the blood stream through an orifice at the tip. The device comprises a frame having a plurality of radially outwardly projecting frame elements in the form of elongated wire struts extending lengthwise of the catheter. Each wire strut has a generally V-shaped radially outwardly projecting mid-portion, with the apex of the V-shaped mid-portion adapted to rest on the wall of the blood vessel. The distal ends of the wire struts are affixed to the catheter. The proximal ends are longitudinally sidable in grooves in the catheter. The grooves are long enough to accommodate the wire struts when flattened somewhat to pass through narrower blood vessels or when flattened completely for storage in a tube shelter.

Centerflow catheter

A bladder catheter comprising an elongate tubular body having a proximal portion with a proximal end, a distal portion, preferably between at least about 8 cm and 30 cm, with a distal end and a retaining portion with retaining mechanism disposed between the proximal portion and the distal portion. The tubular body of the bladder catheter further comprises a drainage lumen extending therethrough from a drainage port in the proximal end to at least one opening in the distal portion. The distal end of the catheter preferably comprises a weight. A method of continuously draining urine in a patient, comprising the steps of inserting a bladder catheter according to the present invention into the patient's urethra until the retaining mechanism and distal portion reside within the patient's bladder, actuating the retaining mechanism of the catheter, allowing the distal end of the catheter to fall into the dependent portion and, thereby, draining urine in the dependent portion of the bladder.
