A system includes a pressure exchanger configured to exchange pressure between a first fluid and a second fluid. The system further includes a shaft at least partially disposed within the pressure exchanger. The system further includes an electric motor coupled to the shaft. The electric motor is configured to control fluid flow in the pressure exchanger. A controller is configured to receive sensor data from one or more sensors associated with the pressure exchanger and vary proportions of the first fluid and the second fluid entering the pressure exchanger to reduce mixing of the first fluid and the second fluid in the pressure exchanger.

A method includes removing a worn portion from a component of a rotary isobaric pressure exchanger (IPX). The rotary IPX is configured to exchange pressures between a first fluid and a second fluid. A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX), a first heat exchanger, and a second heat exchanger. The PX is configured to receive a first fluid and a second fluid, exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid, and output the first fluid and the second fluid. The first heat exchanger is configured to receive the first fluid from a first gas cooler and the second fluid from a second gas cooler, exchange first heat between the first fluid and the second fluid, and output the first fluid and the second fluid. The second heat exchanger is configured to receive heat exchanger output from the first heat exchanger and evaporator output from an evaporator, exchange second heat between the heat exchanger output and the evaporator output, and provide the heat exchanger output to the PX and the evaporator output to the compressor.

A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX) configured to receive a first fluid at a first pressure and a second fluid at a second pressure and exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid. The system further includes a condenser configured to provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a corresponding environment. The system further includes a first ejector to receive a first gas and increase pressure of the first gas to form the second fluid at the second pressure. The first ejector is further to provide the second fluid at the second pressure to the PX.

A system includes a pressure exchanger (PX) configured to receive a first fluid at a first pressure, receive a second fluid at a second pressure, and exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid. The first fluid is to exit the PX at a third pressure and the second fluid is to exit the PX at a fourth pressure. The system further includes a first heat exchanger configured to provide the first fluid to the PX and provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a third fluid. The system further includes a turbine configured to receive the third fluid output from the first heat exchanger. The turbine is further configured to convert corresponding thermal energy of the third fluid into kinetic energy.

Heat pump systems with pressure exchangers

A system includes an isobaric pressure exchanger (IPX) configured to exchange pressure between a first fluid and a second fluid. The IPX includes a rotor configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the rotor. The rotor forms rotor ports arranged substantially symmetrically around the longitudinal axis at a distal end of the rotor. The IPX further includes an end cover configured to be disposed at the first distal end of the rotor. The end cover forms end cover ports. The rotor ports are arranged for hydraulic communication with the end cover ports. The IPX further includes an insert disposed between two of the rotor ports or between two of the end cover ports.

A fluid handling system includes a pressure exchanger (PX) configured to receive a first fluid at a first pressure and a second fluid at a second pressure and exchange pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid. The system further includes a condenser configured to provide corresponding thermal energy from the first fluid to a corresponding environment. The system further includes a receiver to receive the first fluid output by the PX. The receiver forms a chamber to separate the first fluid into a first gas and a first liquid. The system further includes a first booster to increase pressure of a portion of the first gas to form the second fluid at the second pressure and provide the second fluid at the second pressure to the PX.

A hydraulic energy transfer system including an isobaric pressure exchanger (IPX) configured to exchange pressure between a first fluid and a second fluid. The IPX includes a channel formed by the IPX. The IPX is designed to direct the first fluid to a first opening of the channel and the second fluid to a second opening of the channel. The IPX further includes a barrier disposed within the channel. The barrier is designed to reduce mixing of the first fluid and the second fluid while exchanging pressure between the first fluid and the second fluid within the channel.

A pumping system that includes a reciprocating isobaric pressure exchanger (reciprocating IPX) designed to exchange pressures between a first fluid and a second fluid. The first fluid includes a substantially particulate free fluid and the second fluid includes a particulate laden fluid. The reciprocating IPX includes a valve having a first and second piston. The value further includes a shaft coupling the first piston to the second piston and a drive coupled to the shaft.
