A microwave device for inactivation of viruses is disclosed. The microwave device comprising a housing and a field generator. The housing has a cavity configured to receive an object contaminated with viruses within the cavity and the field generator is configured to irradiate the cavity with microwave energy at a band of frequencies and a power level configured to inactivate the virus. The cavity is located within a near-field of a radiation pattern produced by the field generator at the band of frequencies and the microwave energy causes a dipole vibration on the virus that causes the virus to fracture.

A system and method is provided in which a single-pole-double-throw switch controls whether a circular loop transmits a right-hand circular polarized signal or a left-hand circular polarized signal. The single-pole-double-throw switch is shielded from the circular loop by a metallic ground plane. An annulus of dielectric insulates the circular loop from the metallic ground plane.

Methods and systems provide a non-ionizing alternative to conventional mammography X-ray techniques, which expose patients to ionizing radiation, for breast cancer tumor detection, using a miniaturized (wafer scale) array of ultra wide band (UWB) radio frequency (RF) sensors operating at 60 GHz (non-ionizing&#x2014;no X-ray type accumulative radiations) that have capability to use both linear and polarized sensors, tomography, and suppression of scattering for improved imaging. Coding techniques provide significant processing gain that is essential for the large attenuation of transmitted signals in breast tissue operating at these high frequencies. The increased bandwidth of UWB RF detection provides better depth resolution of breast and body tissue. Using polarization improves detection of abnormal tissues. An extremely miniaturized (wafer scale) cluster of transmitter and receiver antenna elements improves detection at deeper parts of the breast and can detect cancerous cells in dense breasts often not picked up by mammography.

Handheld and portable scanners for millimeter wave mammography and instant mammography imaging

Methods and systems are disclosed for scalable antenna arrays that may be built up using pluggable tiles that have low distortion, flat band high gain, and structured to channelize the signals into narrow bands that may be 40 MHz or even smaller bandwidth apart. Antenna array tiles may employ traveling wave tube (TWT) components and wafer scale arrays. H-topology, equal length, feed networks connect the signals to antenna elements. The fractal-like, recursively repeating at different size scales, structure for the H-tree feed networks, implemented using pluggable tiles, facilitates the scalability of the high gain waveguide antenna array. System integration across the 75-115 GHz spectral band implements scalable aperture architecture with emphasis on addressing considerations of the TX power requirement, feed network, channelizing signals at different frequency bands using specially designed diplexers and combiners, cooling, component placement, and isolation.

A drone is provided with a convolutional neural network that processes a fusion of video and radar data to identify and avoid collision threats. The drone includes a transmitter for transmitting the video data to a remote convolutional neural network for identifying structures and for further identifying threats or faults with the structures.

A method for detecting concealed objects includes: scanning with a first transmitted signal having a first polarization; receiving reflected signals from the first transmitted signal; scanning with a second transmitted signal having a second polarization different from the first polarization; receiving reflected signals from the second transmitted signal; performing image processing using reflected signals with the first polarization; performing image processing using reflected signals with the second polarization; and combining the image processing from both polarizations to provide enhanced image resolution.

Integrated ultra wideband, wafer scale, RHCP-LHCP arrays

Methods and systems are provided for relocatable repeaters for wireless communication links to locations that may present accessibility problems using, for example, small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS). An sUAS implemented as an easy-to-operate, small vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft with hovering capability for holding station position may provide an extended range, highly secure, high data rate, repeater system for extending the range of point-to-point wireless communication links (also referred to as 'crosslinks') in which repeater locations are easily relocatable with very fast set-up and relocating times. A repeater system using beam forming and power combining techniques enables a very high gain antenna array with very narrow beam width and superb pointing accuracy. The aircraft includes a control system enabling three-dimensional pointing and sustaining directivity of the beam independently of flight path of the aircraft.

Similar to cell based electronics systems that employ a sea of small unit cells in large scale arrays, such as thin film display monitors or semiconductor memories, an antenna array employs micron to centimeter size antenna pixelate cells that are integrated to form the plate of an antenna. Each row and column of cells in the antenna array may be accessed by digital logic and the RF transmission/reception state of the switchable cell changed. Thus, the antenna plate can be reconfigured and its radiating plate reformed to a specific pattern as an element of a larger array of antennas in wafer scale form.

A tunneling accelerometer that can be implemented as a MEMS micro sensor provides differential sensing that minimizes large forces resulting from undesired environmental effects. Used as a seismic sensor, for example, the accelerometer exhibits maximum sensitivity for small seismic waves and suppresses very large seismic activities occurring at shallower depths. In one embodiment, detected current decreases from its maximum for stronger forces and is maximized for small vibrations. In another embodiment, separation of columns of top and bottom tunneling tip pairs, one column from the next, increases gradually so that the tunneling accelerometer suppresses sensitivity to large accelerations such as large seismic activity. A manufacturing process for the accelerometer provides reduced complexity for better yield.

Systems and methods for screening, where a subject walks through or in front of a passive detector (or scanning unit) to be screened for possession of unauthorized electronics devices, provide for detecting and monitoring electronics systems not authorized to be used in secure areas. By focusing a very narrow beam width antenna array, individuals can be screened who may have concealed electronics devices that can pose danger to the surroundings. There is no need for removing clothing or accessories such as a jacket or backpack, for example. The detection system may include a frequency scanned passive receiver that captures a signal from a detected electronics device, measures its strength, and identifies the device or classifies it according to a pre-determined set of categories (e.g., cellular phone, camera, or global positioning system (GPS)).

Methods and systems are provided for achieving delivery of power wirelessly using a highly beam-formed array of radio frequency (RF) transmitters as a source and a spatially beam-formed array of receivers that collect the impinged RF power and feed a multistage RF to direct current (RF-DC) conversion circuit that, for example, increases output voltage by doubling the voltage at each stage, while power delivery remains constant. One or more embodiments may provide energy wirelessly and&#x2014;unlike conventional systems where the power flux density may be too low for applications where an energy density (specific energy) on the order of several mega-Joules per kilogram (MJ/Kg) is desired&#x2014;may provide sufficient power flux density for many practical applications.
