Tires with high strength reinforcement

Steel reinforcing cords (36) having four or more filaments (38, 40, 42 and 44) in two groups, one twisted and the other untwisted with a filament tensile strength TS equal to K.sub.1 -K.sub.2 D where K.sub.1 =4080N/mm.sup.2, and D is a filament diameter in mm to form cords with a break load equal to N(720.40D.sup.2 -352.6D.sup.3 ; CE is the cord efficiency, D is the filament diameter in millimeters and N is the number of filaments.

High strength cord

The present process comprising the steps of: (1) heating a steel wire to a temperature which is within the range of approximately 850.degree. C. to about 1050.degree. C. for a period of at least about 2 seconds; wherein said steel wire is comprised of a microalloyed high carbon steel which consists essentially of about 97.03 to about 98.925 weight percent iron, from about 0.72 to about 0.92 weight percent carbon, from about 0.3 to about 0.8 weight percent manganese, from about 0.05 to about 0.4 weight percent silicon, and from about 0.005 to about 0.85 weight percent of at least one member selected from the group consisting of chromium, vanadium, nickel, and boron, with the proviso that the total amount of silicon, manganese, chromium, vanadium, nickel, and boron in the microalloyed high carbon steel is within the range of about 0.7 to 0.9 weight percent; (2) continuously cooling the steel wire at a cooling rate of less than 100.degree. C. per second until a transformation from austenite to pearlite begins; (3) allowing the transformation from austenite to pearlite to proceed with an increase in the wire temperature resulting from recalescence; and (4) cooling the patented steel wire to ambient temperature.

Process for producing patented steel wire

Tires using high tensile reinforcement with values of at least 1240 N (280 lbs) for U+T type cord and at least 2000 N (450 lbs) for bunched type cord.

The present invention discloses a process for producing a patented steel wire having a microstructure which is essentially pearlite with a very fine lamellar spacing between carbide and ferrite platelets which has good ductility and which can be drawn to develop high tensile strength, said process comprising the steps of:

Cord (36) reinforced composites 26 for tires (10) or the like having cords 36 in a diameter range of 0.30 mm to 1.6 mm with a cord break strength (CBL) of N(720.4D.sup.2 -352.6D.sup.3)CE.

High strength reinforcement

A method and apparatus for drawing steel wire to produce high tensile strength, steel wire with increased torsional ductility. The wire is drawn through a plurality of standard dies (14) in a wire drawing machine (10). The cross section of the wire is reduced by a constant reduction of about 15% to about 18% at each of the standard dies (14) with the exception of the final two dies (18, 19). The wire is then reduced by about 10% to about 90% of the typical reduction at the next to last die (18) and the remainder of the reduction at the final die (19).
