A computer-implemented method of monitoring power lines of a polyphase power system. Data indicative of coefficients of a linear transformation is updated based on a deviation of a calibration vector from an estimate thereof. The linear transformation relates electric field or magnetic measurements around the power lines to the calibration vector corresponding to voltages or currents, respectively, in the power lines. The estimate is determined based on the data and the plurality of electric field or magnetic field measurements. The data indicative of the coefficients of the linear transformation is then used to estimate voltages or currents based on electric or magnetic field measurements to monitor the voltages or currents. A recalibration condition indicative of time, sensed environmental conditions, or user inputs may be used to achieve adaptive real-time monitoring. A system including a processor and computer-readable memory configured to cause the processor to carry-out the method.

Method and system for monitoring power lines

An optical sensor configuration contains an optical current sensor and/or an optical voltage sensor. The sensor configuration further contains a first and a second hollow member, preferably ring shaped profiles, which are together disposed to form a hollow section. The sensor configuration further includes an optical fiber of the current sensor disposed in an annular groove, the groove being disposed at the boundary surface between the first hollow member and the second hollow member, and/or an optical fiber of the voltage sensor is disposed in a recess of the second hollow member. The first hollow member has an annular recess into which the second hollow member is disposed whereas the first hollow member is an L-shaped or U-shaped ring with two legs and the recess is formed between the two legs.

Optical sensor arrangement for electrical switchgear

Multi-phase, gas insulated electrical switchgear with optical voltage and/or current sensors are described. Compensation for contributions to sensor readings from non-associated conductors is provided. A processor is connected to voltage and/or current sensors which are placed near conductor whose voltages and/or currents are to be measured. The processor can receive outputs from those sensors and compensate the outputs for contributions which are attributable to sources other than the conductors which are intended to be measured.

Sensors and sensing methods for three-phase, gas insulated devices

A sensor provides an analog sensor output signal that is first converted by a A/D converter, followed by a digital signal processor having a digital signal output that is converted to an analog signal by way of a D/A converter so as to provide an analog information output signal indicative of a parameter quantity intended to be sensed. An analog dither signal and/or a digital dither signal is provided for modulating the A/D converter input signal and/or D/A converter input signal, respectively, separately, or in combination, to enhance dynamic range accuracy of the resultant analog information output signal representative of the quantity of the parameter intended to be sensed.

Wide dynamic range sensor signal processing method & circuitry for analog and digital information signals

A time division multiplexed optical voltage measuring system includes an optical voltage sensing system module including, (i) a plurality of optical sensors where each sensor is responsive to an input interrogation light wave, and (ii) one or more optical outputs affected by sensed electric field thereat. The optical voltage sensing system module includes an optical circuit arrangement having (i) an input for receiving a module specific pulsed light wave derived from a primary pulsed light wave from a remote light source, and (ii) arranged such that each of the plurality of optical sensors receives an interrogation pulsed light wave. The optical circuit arrangement of the optical voltage sensing system module further includes at least one optical wave combiner for combining like-kind of outputs from all of the plurality of optical sensors. The optical circuit is arranged such that the pulsed light waves from the outputs of different optical sensors arrive at the optical wave combiner at differing times. In turn, the output of the combiner is passed to a detector and signal processor at a remote location for signal processing, and providing a measurement of the voltage intended to be measured. In a specific embodiment, each voltage sensing modules is arranged integral with a high voltage insulator column of a multi-phase power line system.

Time division multiplexed optical measuring system

An electric field sensing system is characterized so that a signal processor may derive an output representative of an electric field intended to be measured, particularly established by high voltage on a power line, with enhanced accuracy. Characterizing parameters may be derived from signals representative of a pair of light waves derived from a light wave exiting an optical electric field sensing element in a electric field sensing head spatially positioned in the high voltage environment.

Optical electric field or voltage sensing system

A voltage sensor for measuring the voltage on high voltage lines is formed by an electrically isolating-section of material with resistive shielding (RS) that structures the electric field generated by a voltage difference between the two ends of the isolating-section and provides shielding of the internal electric field from sources of electric field interference external to the voltage sensor. At least one electric field sensor is provided to sense the electric field in the isolating-section the output(s) of which is(are) used to infer the voltage difference.

Voltage sensor

A voltage sensor for measuring the voltage on high voltage lines is formed by an electrically isolating section of dielectric material that structures the electric field generated by a voltage difference between the two ends of the isolating section and provides screening of the electric field from other electric field sources external to the isolating section. At least one electric field sensor is provided to sense the electric field in the isolating section the output(s) of which are weighted and combined to provide an accurate measurement of the voltage between the two ends. The electric field sensors are located and their outputs are combined so that error in the voltage measurement due to the influence of external electric field sources is within an acceptable range.
