A pointing device having a moveable puck that moves in a predetermined field of motion by applying a lateral force thereto is disclosed. A first linear spring is attached to the puck, the first spring applying a first force to the puck at each location in the field of motion. A second linear spring is also attached to the puck, the second spring applying a second force to the puck at each location in the field of motion. The first and second springs return the puck to a predetermined location in the field of motion when the lateral force is not applied to the puck. The first linear spring is folded around a bending point and attached to a portion of the pointing device that is stationary with respect to the puck.

Pointing device with extended travel

An electronic device predicts a target key on a soft keyboard for selection by a user and enlarges the target key to make it easier for the user to select the target key. The electronic device includes a display that displays a cursor and keys that constitute a soft keyboard and a cursor control device for controlling movement of the cursor on the display. The electronic device further includes a processor operable to receive a cursor control signal representing movement of the cursor on the display from the cursor control device. In response to the cursor control signal, the processor predicts one of the keys likely to be next selected as the target key and enlarges the target key relative to other keys on the display.

Electronic device and method for simplifying text entry using a soft keyboard

A microfabricated device has a first substrate, a second substrate, a film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) device, and a circuit. The second substrate is bonded to the first substrate to define a chamber. The FBAR device is located on a surface of the first substrate and inside the chamber. The circuit is located on a surface of the second substrate and inside the chamber. An electrical connection connects the circuit and the FBAR device.

Film bulk acoustic resonator package and method of fabricating same

An input device having a movable puck and display screen is disclosed. The puck is confined to move on a puck surface having a puck field of motion defined thereon. The puck field of motion is divided into a pointing region and a function region. A controller determines a position for the puck within the field of motion. The display screen displays a two-dimensional scene and a cursor that moves within the scene in a manner controlled by the position of the puck when the puck is in the pointing region. The controller causes the scene to change when the puck is in the function region. A deformable barrier that inhibits the movement of the puck into the function region can be used to prevent inadvertent changing of the display scene. The inhibition is overcome by a user applying additional force to the puck in a direction parallel to the surface.

Hybrid pointing device

A pointing device having a puck sub-assembly and a base sub-assembly is disclosed. The puck sub-assembly includes a moveable puck having a user sensor that detects the interaction of a user and the puck. The puck is confined to move within a puck field of motion. The puck sub-assembly includes a support member having an opening therein that determines a boundary for the puck field of motion. The base sub-assembly includes a base surface over which the puck moves, a position detector that measures the position of the puck in the puck field of motion, and an attachment mechanism. The attachment mechanism connects the base sub-assembly to the puck sub-assembly such that the puck sub-assembly is easily removed. The base surface is accessible when the puck sub-assembly is separated from the base assembly. The puck sub-assembly can also include a restoring mechanism that returns the puck to a predetermined area.

Modular assembly for a self-indexing computer pointing device

A pointing device having a moveable puck and a first belt having a slot therein in which said puck moves in a first direction is disclosed. The first belt is wrapped around the first and second belt guides such that the first belt moves back and forth in a second direction different from the first direction. A spring system returns the puck to an equilibrium position when the puck is released from a position that is displaced from the equilibrium position. A sensor measures the position of the puck. In one embodiment, the spring system includes first and second springs that are attached to a surface that is fixed with respect to the first belt. The first spring provides a restoring force in one direction when the second spring provides a restoring force in the opposite direction and vice versa.

The pointing device has a moveable puck that moves over a surface in a puck field of motion. A position detector measures the puck position in the puck field of motion. In one embodiment, the puck includes a user sensor that detects an interaction between a user and the puck. A controller causes a cursor to move on a display in response to the puck moving in the puck field of motion when the user sensor senses the interaction between the user and the puck. The magnitude and direction of motion of the cursor is determined by the magnitude and direction of motion of the puck in the puck field of motion. In another embodiment, a restoring mechanism is provided that returns the puck to a predetermined area in the puck field of motion when the user releases the puck.

Compact pointing device

An optical module includes an active optical component, an optical fiber, a beam shaping optical component and a positioning device. The optical fiber is arranged with respect to the active optical component to be capable of propagating light along an optical path between the active optical component and the optical fiber. The beam shaping optical component is located in the optical path between the optical fiber and the active optical component. The positioning device is for moving either the beam shaping optical component with respect to the optical fiber, the beam shaping optical component with respect to the active optical component, or the active optical component with respect to the optical fiber, or a combination.

A variable capacitor. The variable capacitor has a movable capacitor electrode including a major surface and a fixed capacitor electrode including a major surface. The major surface of the fixed capacitor electrode is opposite the major surface of the movable capacitor electrode and is separated therefrom by a gap. The major surface of the movable capacitor electrode includes a rigidity-increasing feature. The rigidity-increasing feature further provides a capacitance-increasing topography and reduces snap-together of the capacitor electrodes.

An optical port with directional control. The port includes a transmitter, receiver, and first actuator. The transmitter generates an outgoing light signal that propagates in a transmission direction in response to an outgoing electrical signal. The receiver receives an incoming light signal and generating an incoming electrical signal therefrom, the receiver having a reception direction aligned with the transmission direction. The first actuator alters the transmission direction of the outgoing light signal in response to a first control signal. In one embodiment, the first actuator determines the direction of the outgoing light signal in a first plane, and a second actuator controls the direction of the outgoing light signal by an amount determined by a second control signal. The second actuator controls the direction of the outgoing light signal in a second plane that is orthogonal to the first plane. The actuators can be constructed from beam deflectors that utilize moveable mirrors to alter the transmission direction. In one embodiment, the deflector includes an array of mirrors, each mirror rotating about an axis through the mirror. Actuators that rotate the transmitter and reflector may also be utilized.

Self-aligning infra-red communication link

An inkjet printhead and fabrication method include integrating actuators and ink firing chambers on a single substrate, such as a semiconductor substrate. The integration process utilizes semiconductor-on-insulator (SOI) techniques in the preferred embodiment. Actuators are formed on one surface of the substrate, typically a silicon substrate, and firing chambers are aligned with the actuators. Electrical switching devices, such as transistors, are formed along the surface and are utilized to individually address the actuators. After the integrated structure is formed, a supply manifold may be attached to the structure for replenishing fluid ink following a firing operation. Optionally, a flow control mechanism, such as a valve, may be incorporated between the manifold and the firing chamber.
